About The Position

The Humane Society for Southwest Washington is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join their team. This is a temporary full-time position. HSSW is the largest and most innovative animal welfare organization in the region, serving over 10,000 animals annually through its shelter campuses and community-based programs. They aim to keep pets and people together by expanding access to affordable veterinary care, spay/neuter services, training, and support. HSSW also operates ReTails Thrift Store, which provides vital funding for their mission. Requirements

  • Competent in monitoring anesthesia and assisting surgeon.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily pre- and post-op care of surgical patients and disease control protocols.
  • Maintain a clean, sterile, and functioning prep and surgery room.
  • Clean and maintain surgical instruments; prepare surgical packs.
  • Restrain animals for exams and anesthetic induction; assist in surgical prep.
  • Assist Licensed Veterinary Technician and Surgeons.
  • Enter surgery records into database; maintain paperwork.
  • Clean and disinfect tables, floors, cages, and surgery equipment.
  • Monitor, treat, and medicate all animals under veterinary care.
  • Assist Veterinarian in examinations, treatments, diagnostics, and other duties.
  • Input data into Shelter Buddy regarding exams, medications, and treatments.
  • Demonstrate and teach technical skills and proper sanitation protocols and procedures to other staff members of HSSW who participate in animal care.
  • Clean and maintain areas of shelter clinic.
  • Assist with inventory and order supplies.
  • Promote a safe working environment and follow safety protocols.
  • Maintain equipment in good working condition.
  • Educate clients on pre- and post-surgical care of their animals.
  • Integrate with volunteers and workforce partners, taking an active role in their training, safety, performance, and job satisfaction.
  • Respond to inquiries and concerns from Foster Care providers and volunteers, schedule, and assist with appointments.
  • Attend continuing education and perform other duties and special projects.
  • Provide training to staff/volunteers on disease control standards, shelter medicine protocols, and foster care guidelines.
  • Provide advice and resources on HSSW programs and other animal welfare-related topics.
  • Provide orientation and training to veterinary students, veterinary assistants, and interns.
