Veterinary Assistant - Equine & Small Animal
About The Position
All West Veterinary Hospital is seeking an experienced mixed-animal Veterinary Assistant to support clients and patients across hospital care. This role offers varied work across patient care, client service, outpatient procedures, surgery, and dentistry. The assistant will work with equine patients during the summer months and small-animal patients during the winter, transitioning between the two areas throughout the year. The position calls for a dependable, motivated team member who works well in a fast-paced environment, multitasks efficiently, anticipates team needs, communicates professionally, and provides attentive support throughout each patient visit. The schedule is full-time, four 10-hour days, with availability needed Monday through Friday. Voluntary weekend coverage for hospitalized equine patients is available. Farm calls for equine patients may be possible in the future. Compensation is $19–$22 per hour.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience as a veterinary assistant.
- Safe animal handling and restraint skills for dogs, cats, and horses of varying sizes and temperaments.
- Ability to assist with exams, treatments, and outpatient procedures.
- Experience collecting patient histories and obtaining weights and vital signs.
- Ability to administer oral medications to equine and small-animal patients.
- Radiography skills and proper patient positioning.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established protocols.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Availability Monday through Friday for a full-time four-day, 10-hour schedule.
Nice To Haves
- Veterinary experience with equine patients is preferred.
- Hands-on equine experience through boarding, ranch work, or other settings will also be considered.
Responsibilities
- Support exam room, outpatient, surgical, and dental workflows.
- Safely and gently handle and restrain equine and small-animal patients during outpatient and procedural care.
- Prepare patients, equipment, and treatment areas for appointments and procedures.
- Maintain accurate medical records and treatment documentation.
- Review treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions with clients clearly and compassionately.
- Build positive client relationships through education, communication, and attentive service.
- Keep exam rooms, treatment areas, and procedural spaces clean, organized, and prepared.
- Assist with examinations, treatments, and outpatient procedures.
- Collect patient histories and obtain patient weights and vital signs.
- Administer oral medications to equine and small-animal patients.
- Take radiographs and position patients appropriately.
- Apply proper bandages to equine patients.
