About The Position

Anderson Humane is a progressive, non-profit, no-kill animal welfare organization seeking a veterinarian to practice meaningful, mission-driven medicine. The role focuses on providing compassionate medical and surgical services to animals within the shelter, foster network, and a low-cost community clinic, without the pressures of upselling or revenue quotas. Requirements

  • DVM from an accredited program.
  • Illinois Veterinary License in good standing (or ability to obtain).
  • Illinois Controlled Substance License and DEA License (or ability to obtain).
  • Strong diagnostic skills and clinical judgement.
  • Surgical proficiency including spay/neuter.
  • Collaborative mindset and strong communication.
  • Commitment to humane and progressive animal care.
  • Willingness to pursue Fear Free Certification (provided).

Nice To Haves

  • Shelter medicine or nonprofit experience.
  • Comfort with small mammals or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to consult on occasional wildlife cases (managed by wildlife staff).

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality diagnostic, medical, and surgical care to dogs, cats, and small mammals.
  • Perform spay/neuter and other routine shelter procedures.
  • Support foster families and departmental teams managing medical cases.
  • Perform limited low-cost clinic procedures.
  • Triage and stabilize urgent medical cases.
  • Provide humane, progressive care using Fear Free principles.
  • Serve as the primary medical partner for animal care, intake, foster, and adoption teams.
  • Mentor veterinary technicians and clinic support staff.
  • Collaborate with leadership on policies and protocols, workflow improvements, and future clinic planning.
  • Maintain high ethical and professional standards.
  • Ensure accurate medical records and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Contribute to a supportive work environment for staff, volunteers, and animals.
  • Provide input and feedback on program development and operational improvements.
  • Participate in mission-focused meetings, trainings, and organization events.
  • Embrace additional duties that support the organizational mission.

Benefits

  • Competitive hourly rate equivalent to an annual salary of $120,000 - $160,000
  • Sign-on bonus: Up to $5,000 for a schedule of 20 - 30 hours per work week (prorated as applicable), paid in two installments at 90 days and six months of consistent part-time employment.
