About The Position

The Veterinarian (DVM) is responsible for providing comprehensive veterinary medical care for shelter animals while promoting the highest standards of animal welfare in accordance with the Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) Guidelines, Texas Veterinary Practice Act, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This position oversees preventative medicine, diagnostics, surgery, treatment protocols, disease prevention, and humane euthanasia while collaborating with shelter leadership to improve animal health outcomes, operational efficiency, and adoption success. The Veterinarian serves as the medical authority for the shelter and provides guidance and training to veterinary support staff.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Current license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas.
  • Current DEA registration.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of veterinary experience.
  • Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's license or higher and insurable under our auto policy.
  • Extensive knowledge of shelter medicine principles and best practices.
  • Strong surgical and anesthesia skills.
  • Knowledge of infectious disease management and shelter biosecurity.
  • Working knowledge of current veterinary standards and practices.
  • Understanding of canine and feline behavior and humane animal handling techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to make sound medical decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, rescue organizations, and the public.
  • Proficiency with veterinary medical records software.
  • Commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality animal care.
  • Must pass background check and pre-employment substance abuse screening as a condition of employment.
  • Must pass FBI Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) fingerprint-based criminal background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Texas Driver License.
  • Shelter medicine or high-volume spay/neuter experience preferred.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring veterinary support staff preferred.
  • Experience with Chameleon software preferred.
  • A motor vehicle record check and job-related doctor's physical exam may also be required.
