About The Position

The Division of Environmental Health, part of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, works to prevent and manage illnesses and injuries caused by environmental and workplace health risks. With a team of 1,000 professionals, the Division conducts outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement across a wide range of areas, including environmental investigations, lead poisoning prevention, occupational health, injury prevention, food safety, childcare, radiation control, water and air quality, climate, vector control, veterinary public health, and pest management. The Office of Veterinary Public Health Services is dedicated to safeguarding the health of New York City residents and visitors by preventing animal-borne diseases and reducing related hazards and nuisances. Through effective animal control and regulation, we work to ensure a safe and healthy urban environment. The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene seeks a dedicated and experienced veterinarian to support its mission of protecting both human and animal communities, which is grounded in the recognition that human, animal, and environmental health are interconnected. This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on animal welfare and public health in one of the world’s most dynamic urban environments. The selected candidate will play a central role in managing zoonotic disease outbreaks, overseeing animal-related regulations, and serving as a technical liaison for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The Division of Environmental Health seeks a Veterinarian Part Time for its Bureau of Veterinary and Pest Control Services.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid New York State license to practice veterinary medicine.

Nice To Haves

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multidisciplinary team

Responsibilities

• Monitoring and investigation of reported cases of animal bite exposures, review of animal health certificates and related documents.
• Monitoring and conducting site visits of Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC), spay and neuter providers and other permitted holding facilities to maintain compliance with regulations and contract of services.
• Developing and/or implementing policies related to animal handling facilities.
• Conducting investigations of diseases at permitted animal holding facilities.
• Advising/consulting with veterinarians & public health officials on veterinary public health issues.
• Administering the department's Animal Handling Course veterinary module or related trainings.
• Making recommendations and assisting the Director in the formulation of services for ACC shelter operations and/or other animal services provided to the Health Department.
