About The Position

The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is seeking a veterinarian interested in spay/neuter services, shelter medicine, or supporting their mission to make a difference for animals and the people who love them. WHS operates shelters in multiple counties across Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Door, Brown, and Kenosha, as well as a Spay/Neuter Clinic in West Allis and a wildlife rehabilitation center in Milwaukee. The organization offers a wide range of services including adoption, youth programs, low-cost veterinary resources, retail, volunteer programs, and dog training. This role involves performing high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter surgeries for public and/or shelter animals, as well as other necessary surgeries for shelter animals. The veterinarian will ensure safe, effective, and efficient medical processes, provide vaccinations and medical screenings, monitor animal health, develop treatment plans, and offer medical information to clients. The position also involves training and supporting designated persons in patient care and clinic practices. WHS is an independent nonprofit, receiving no general government funding and not part of any national umbrella group. They are an equal opportunity employer.

Requirements

  • DVM degree and license
  • Ability to partner with clients, staff, and volunteers from diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to navigate emotional aspects of animal welfare work
  • Able to successfully meet the physical demands of the job, which include stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions
  • Must be able to routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Perform high-volume, high-quality, safe spay/neuter surgeries for public and/or shelter animals
  • Perform other surgeries as needed for shelter animals
  • Ensuring safe, effective and efficient medical processes from check in to discharge, including follow-up
  • Vaccinating animals and providing quality medical screenings
  • Monitoring the daily health of clients and/or shelter animals
  • Develop and implement treatment plans as needed for animals in shelter and foster
  • Providing medical information to clients and answering questions as needed
  • Train and support any designated persons in all aspects of patient care and efficient/safe clinic practices, while maintaining a professional and positive approach
  • All other duties as assigned
