About The Position

State Road Animal Hospital offers a veterinarian externship for DVM students who have completed their first year of veterinary school and are currently enrolled in an accredited veterinary medicine program. The externship provides meaningful learning, professional growth, and practical experience in a modern, multi-doctor hospital that has served the Alma community for over 60 years.

Externs work with experienced veterinarians, take part in daily patient care, and discuss real cases, treatment options, and clinical decision-making. Learning may span general practice, client communication, surgery, and approaches to care that balance medical standards with client circumstances and patient quality of life. The experience is customized to the student’s academic requirements and personal learning goals, within a welcoming, team-oriented culture that values communication, honesty, ethics, and patient welfare.

Eligible students may receive reimbursement for eligible expenses up to $600 per week.

Requirements

• Must have completed the first year of veterinary school.
• Must be currently enrolled in an accredited veterinary medicine program.

Responsibilities

• Work one-on-one with experienced veterinarians and set learning goals aligned with interests and future career plans.
• Participate actively in daily patient care.

• Learn approaches to care ranging from gold-standard diagnostics and treatment plans to practical alternatives that account for client circumstances and patient quality of life.
