About The Position

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is seeking a Veterinarian Advanced to manage the resources and activities of the Salisbury Animal Health Laboratory necropsy area and provide pathology services. This role is crucial in identifying diseases that could cause economic injury to the State’s vital animal industries or pose a threat to public health. The diagnoses provided are critical for guiding field veterinarians, the State Veterinarian, and the Secretary of Agriculture in determining appropriate courses of action for quarantine restrictions and animal disease emergency response plans. This position also serves as the MDA Animal Health Laboratory liaison to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore School of Veterinary Medicine (UMES) and is considered an essential employee for continuity of operations purposes.

Requirements

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or a Veterinary Medical Doctor’s degree from a college or university accredited or recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association or its equivalent.
  • Four years of full-time postdoctoral experience in Veterinary Medicine.
  • Three years must have been in a Veterinary diagnostic laboratory specialty area or equivalent.
  • Employees assigned duties requiring the operation of a motor vehicle will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

Responsibilities

  • Provides animal diagnostic services and guidance to the public, private veterinarians, state and federal animal health officials, and the Secretary of Agriculture.
  • Collects history, performs gross necropsy on all species, records pathological lesions, selects and collects appropriate tissues for testing, interprets results, and reads microscopic slides.
  • Consults with other MDA veterinary pathologists as necessary to confirm diagnosis.
  • Prepares and provides reports of diagnosis or health status to referring veterinarians, field personnel, and other animal health officials.
  • Directs and oversees professional and technical activities of the large animal necropsy area by assigning cases, tracking progress, and reviewing reports.
  • Directs and oversees administrative and clerical activities of the necropsy areas including fee determination, budget requests, procurement, and staff scheduling.
  • Serves as the MDA AH Laboratory Liaison with the UMES School of Veterinary Medicine, coordinating with administration and faculty, and assisting in curriculum development.
  • Serves as a mentor for candidates for veterinary pathology board certification, junior veterinary pathologists, veterinary college externs, and pre-veterinary students.
  • Determines needs for physical, technological, human, and other resources to maintain or improve diagnostic services and makes corresponding requests and recommendations.
  • May include court appearances as an expert witness, outreach activities, and consultation with peers in other MDA Animal Health Laboratories.
  • May include performing job functions at other sites across the state as needed.
