About The Position

The Port of Seattle is committed to assisting military personnel departing active-duty service transition to civilian employment. The Veteran's Fellowship Program is designed to provide short term (6 months) employment that will assist veterans selected for the program in identifying transferable skills, exposure to a civilian work environment, career assistance, exposure to corporate business practices, mentoring, and resume and interview assistance. This position will help fill a gap between day to day operations and long term preparedness in the Maritime Operations group. As a Veteran Fellow, you will help strengthen that connection and build out the readiness and resilience our maritime security program needs, enhancing the overall operational posture.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3) years of active duty or mobilized reserve duty service in a branch of the U.S. Military Service (including the United States Coast Guard).
  • Documentation of an honorable discharge from active or reserve status must be presented as part of the application process.
  • Veterans Fellowship applicants must be within twenty-four (24) months of discharge to apply for a fellowship unless they have not worked full-time since their discharge and have been a full-time student in a degree or certification program since their discharge.
  • Commitment to applying equity and exemplifying shared values, behaviors, and practices in all aspects of the work.
  • Military expertise in maritime operations and security, including familiarity with key regulatory frameworks such as Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) and International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
  • Proficiency in risk assessment and preparedness planning, with the ability to support emergency response and continuity‑of‑operations in complex environments.
  • Ability to manage projects efficiently with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to influence and advocate for meaningful change within a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to communicate with clarity working across internal teams and external partners to strengthen readiness and resilience.

Responsibilities

  • Work with internal staff, helping strengthen the safety, security, and operational continuity of maritime facilities and assets by developing and implementing new preparedness strategies, coordinating cross‑functional incident response, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Support security and operational planning, readiness exercises, and partner with internal and external teams to enhance resilience against emerging threats and disruptions.
  • Monitor day‑to‑day operational conditions, identify vulnerabilities, and advance best practices that maintain safe, efficient, and reliable maritime operations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
