About The Position

The Small Laboratory Animal Veterinary Research/Health Technician 1 provides research support, health care, and husbandry for laboratory animals at the Oregon National Primate Research Center. This role involves coordinating work assignments, overseeing task completion, and training other staff to meet federal, state, and departmental requirements for animal health, husbandry, and housing. Specific tasks will vary based on animal population, care requirements, service needs, and staffing. This is the first level in a three-level series, focusing on routine care and assisting with specialized projects under supervision.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED.
Six months of experience providing paid or voluntary care for animals.
Valid driver's license and the ability to drive DCM/ONPRC vehicles on and off campus.

Ability to consistently interact with research investigative staff, supervisors, and co-workers in a positive and constructive manner.
Ability to use proper techniques to perform standard clinical procedures.
Dexterity and manual skills.
Ability to use the computer keyboard to type.
Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively in oral and/or written formats with both technical and professional staff.
Ability to successfully pass an FBI background check.

Nice To Haves

Bachelors degree in science, preferably in a related field such as Animal Sciences, Biology, Physiology, etc.
One year experience working with small laboratory animals, including but not limited to mice, rats, and guinea pigs.
Experience providing paid or voluntary husbandry for animals (i.e., watering, feeding, changing bedding, housing, checking animal's health, etc.).
Experience in the health care of research animals.
Experience as a veterinary technician or assistant.
Experience with handling and administering medications through various routes.
Pharmaceutical drug and controlled drug knowledge.
Knowledge of standardized medical terminology and nomenclature.
Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science at the Laboratory Animal Technician level (LAT) OR equivalent certification such as Certified Animal Health Technician (AHT) or Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT).

Responsibilities

Recognize, report, and record abnormalities in animal health, physical condition, or behavior.
Implement medical orders as authorized by veterinary or research staff.
Handle and care for animals in specialized colonies, including those exposed to chemicals, pathogens, or radioactive materials.
Monitor animal environments, inspect caging and equipment for repairs and safety hazards.
Administer medications and treatments under veterinary supervision.
Perform animal health management procedures, including diagnostic sample collection.
Perform animal husbandry, including cage transfers, feeding, watering, capturing, restraining, and transporting animals.
Assist in the maintenance of breeding colonies, including identification, health assessment, weaning, and permanent identification procedures.
Perform routine sanitization of animal housing, equipment, and facilities.
Recognize and report facility problems and complete authorized corrective actions.
Record requested environmental data.
Assist with, coordinate, and complete tasks following complex research protocols.
Participate in the development and implementation of animal care and use procedures.
Assist with the acquisition and maintenance of regulatory, research, and animal records.
Provide technical services such as obtaining blood samples and administering medications or test materials.
Interact professionally with research investigative staff to meet their needs.
Communicate clearly and professionally in oral and written formats.
Drive vehicles on and between campuses.
Autoclave materials and equipment.
Identify animals.
Assist in loading and unloading animals.
Assist with animal capture and care.
Assist with unloading and storing feed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
