Vehicle Mechanic III
About The Position
This position is responsible for inspecting vehicles and equipment for safe and dependable operation. The Vehicle Mechanic III works on intermediate/advanced level aspects of the maintenance and repairs of company vehicles with little supervision. The role involves diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and engine defects in buses and other automotive and heavy equipment, including diesel engines. It also includes diagnostic troubleshooting and repair of engine codes under the OBD-II system, preparing vehicles for service by cleaning and washing them, and ensuring proper operation of engines, tools, and equipment through preventive maintenance. The mechanic will perform routine maintenance checks on various vehicles and equipment, maintain inventory, perform metal fabrication, and locate sources of problems by observing and listening to mechanical devices. Removing defective parts, operating equipment and power tools safely, and adhering to all safety regulations and company policies are also key aspects of this role. Minor snow removal around the shop and off equipment is also a responsibility.
Requirements
- Minimum age of 18
- Valid Driver’s License (CDL class B with airbrake preferred)
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years automobile or equipment maintenance.
- Knowledge of automotive and mechanic problem solving.
- Basic math skills.
- Knowledge of State and Federal DOT regulations.
- Knowledge of the OBD-II system.
- General knowledge of diagnosis and repair of hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of airbrake systems.

- CDL class B with airbrake
- Airbrake certification
Responsibilities
- Diagnoses and repairs mechanical, electrical and engine defects in buses and other automotive and heavy equipment, including diesel engines.
- Diagnostic troubleshooting and repair of engine codes under the OBD-II system.
- Prep vehicles for service to include cleaning and washing off vehicles/ equipment.
- Ensure proper operation of engines, tools, and equipment by checking for worn parts and completing preventive maintenance according to manufacturers' maintenance manuals.
- Change oil filters, install anti-freeze, and snow chains, repair tires, adjust brakes, lubricate chassis, wheel bearings and other assemblies as required. Perform the required preventive maintenance and regular safety/annual inspections.
- Perform routine maintenance checks on all vehicles and equipment including snow removal machines, heavy equipment, buses, trucks, vans, snowmobiles, and other company vehicles.
- Maintain equipment, parts and supplies inventory and conserves resources by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipate equipment, parts, and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
- Mend damaged body parts.
- Maintain logs and work sheets of inspection and maintenance performed on all equipment.
- Minor snow removal around the shop and off equipment.
- Perform metal fabrication as in cutting and welding.
- Locate sources of problems by observing, listening to, and checking mechanical devices in operation.
- Remove defective parts by dismantling devices, examining, and diagnosing the cause of failure and correcting the condition.
- May operate a variety of equipment and power tools while adhering to all safety regulations and company policies with this equipment.
