About The Position

The Boeing Company's BDS Flight Systems Engineering Capability is seeking a Lead-Architect Vehicle Management Systems Hardware Engineer to join the Air Dominance Vehicle Management System (VMS) team in Berkeley, MO. This role involves working across engineering disciplines to design elements of the VMS hardware, collaborating with requirements, hardware, software, and labs teams for implementation and testing. The position is ideal for engineers from Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerodynamics backgrounds who can leverage their expertise and quickly learn about other areas to develop capabilities for the Vehicle Management System Computer. The role offers the opportunity to see tangible results on exciting aircraft development programs in St. Louis.

Requirements

  • Expertise in designing complex, scalable, and modular vehicle management system architectures
  • Understanding of aerospace vehicle subsystems, avionics, and integration requirements
  • Strong experience with embedded systems, real-time operating systems, and communication protocols
  • Knowledge of securing vehicle systems against cyber threats and complying with industry security standards
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues in system integration and performance
  • Excellent skills to work with multidisciplinary teams and effectively convey technical concepts
  • Experience leading technical teams and managing system development lifecycles
  • Familiarity with aerospace standards such as DO-178C, DO-254, ARP4754, and safety certification processes
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (with a focus in Electrical, Mechanical or Aeronautical), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry
  • Level 5 (Lead): 14+ years of work-related experience with a bachelor’s degree or 12+ years of work-related experience with a masters or 9+ years of work-related experience with a PhD
  • Level 6 (Principal) Level 6: 20+ years of experience leading or working similar projects or teams with a Bachelor’s or combination of technical education and work-related experience with a Masters
  • Ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.
  • An interim Secret Clearance Pre-Start and Final Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop the overall architecture of the Vehicle Management System, ensuring scalability, reliability, and integration with existing aerospace platforms
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define system requirements, establish design standards, and oversee the implementation of software and hardware components
  • Lead technical reviews, troubleshoot system issues, and guide the continuous improvement and maintenance of the vehicle management system in compliance with aerospace safety and regulatory standards
  • Understand and apply job practices, techniques, standards, principles, theories, and concepts
  • Develop statement-of-work and technical performance specifications
  • Analyze, translate, and implement customer requirements into system architecture, hardware design and interface specifications, showing traceability throughout the product lifecycle
  • Defines test and validation approach to ensure system designs meet operational and functional requirements
  • Investigate emerging technologies to develop concepts for future product designs to meet projected requirements and for potential application to internal business strategies
  • Drive the evaluation and selection of emerging technologies to enhance vehicle system performance, cybersecurity, and data management capabilities
  • Mentor engineering teams on architectural best practices and ensure documentation aligns with Boeing’s quality and compliance requirements
