About The Position

This position will function as a VERT II (Vehicle/ Equipment Repair Technician Level II) within the Washington Equipment Shop in Beaufort County. Employees perform a range of progressively responsible tasks involving service, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel powered automotive, heavy equipment as well as power tools. Employees may perform mechanical work at various levels. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. Must be able to perform skilled mechanical work including but not limited to the following systems: Preventive maintenance, brakes (air and hydraulic), steering; tires and tubes; wheels, rims, and hubs; transmission (auto and manual); charging system; cranking system; ignition system; lighting system; cooling system; exhaust system; fuel system; power unit, hydraulics; air conditioning; instruments and gages; and air intake system.

Requirements

• Must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
• No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years.
• No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years.
• Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
• If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state driver’s license in the past ten years, the driver’s record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained.
• Prospective drivers will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states.
• Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position.
• Must sign a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
• Safety Toe shoes are needed.
• Employee will need to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools.
• High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of basic welding principles and application.
• Experience in diagnostics of basic electrical systems and proper repair of wiring.
• Experience in basic hydraulic system repairs including component replacement and hoses.
• Experience using a computer to obtain diagnostic and repair information.
