About The Position

This position will function as a VERT I - at the Newport Equipment Shop in Carteret County. This is skilled mechanic work. The selected candidate will be expected to perform a range of tasks involving servicing and repair of mechanical systems for gasoline/diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment. The selected candidate may perform mechanical work at various levels. Duties of this position include the operation of a fuel and lube truck, to include the fueling of trucks and equipment, ensuring the proper fluid levels (engine oil, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid, PM’s etc.), lubrication of all grease joints and the ability to keep detailed and accurate records of fuel and oil dispensed daily. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. You must be able to perform basic mechanical work within the following systems: Preventive Maintenance, Tires & Tubes, Wheels & Rims, Cranking Systems, Lighting Systems, Cooling Systems, Fuel Systems, and Hydraulic Systems. Note: Employee will need to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Furnish a complete set of mechanic tools.
  • Ability to repair and maintain automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose basic problems using basic diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to prepare paperwork essential to employment and equipment repair.
  • Ability to understand both written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to move parts and materials necessary to repair and maintain equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment for testing purposes.
  • Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to demonstrate commitment to providing a safe working environment by leading by example.
  • Ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals.
  • Ability to read schematics, diagrams, and sketches.
  • Physical strength to move relatively heavy objects.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting.
  • Ability to work in emergency situations and inclement weather.
  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement.
  • Obtain North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License through on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire if not currently possessed.
  • Pre-employment drug testing is required.
  • Sign release form (ALCDRG-01) and background statement (ALCDRG-06).
  • Steel toe safety shoes will be needed.
  • Successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the repair and replacement of tires.
  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Skill in the use of at least 2 tools and pieces of equipment used in the equipment shop such as wrenches, sockets, battery charger, hydraulic jacks, loader, forklift, automotive/truck lift, fuel service truck, tire changer, tire balancer, welder, cutting torch, diagnostic equipment, computer, tire jack, tire balance machine, pneumatic wrench, diagnostic gauges, electronic tester, air impact wrench, air compressor, air gun, torque wrench.
  • Current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
