About The Position

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is seeking a skilled and motivated team member to join our Troop A Body Shop in Pitt County, NC as an Auto Body Mechanic. This position performs highly technical, hands-on work restoring damaged and out-of-service Patrol vehicles to operational readiness. Responsibilities include body repair and realignment, replacement of structural components, automotive glass installation, and refinishing vehicles to factory appearance in support of statewide law enforcement operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two (2) years of experience in automotive body repair and restoration; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to perform a variety of automotive body repair assignments requiring knowledge of vehicle body design, related parts, and repair methods, tools, and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of metals, including the strength and malleability required for automotive body repair and restoration.
  • Working knowledge of automotive body repair equipment and techniques, including acetylene welding, MiG welding, and plasma cutting for removal and replacement of damaged components.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex vehicle body damage, identify problems, determine appropriate repair methods, and complete repairs using proper tools and resources.
  • Ability to read and interpret repair manuals and technical instructions to support accurate and efficient repairs.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including standing for extended periods, bending, lifting, and working with tools and equipment in a shop environment.
  • Must undergo and successfully pass a Criminal Background Investigation and Drug Screening Test.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on repair of damaged patrol vehicles, including dent removal, panel replacement, structural realignment, and repair or replacement of damaged components to restore vehicles to original specifications.
  • Prepare and refinish vehicle surfaces using sanding, buffing, and painting techniques to restore original appearance and ensure high-quality finishes.
  • Restore out-of-service vehicles, including repairing damage, removing decals, and repainting vehicles for return to service.
  • Replace damaged glass and water-resistant seals to ensure proper fit, function, and protection from environmental elements.
  • Perform specialized repair projects and maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment, including proper care of tools and equipment.
