About The Position

The VCS Color Guard Instructor is responsible for designing and implementing color guard programs that enhance the visual and musical aspects of the marching band. This role involves close collaboration with the Marching Band Director and other staff to develop a competitive program. The instructor will attend all rehearsals and performances, teach fundamental and advanced flag techniques, and instruct members on program material. Key responsibilities include planning and delivering engaging lesson plans, coordinating rehearsal schedules, creating effective rehearsal plans, ensuring high performance levels through proper warm-ups and preparation, and managing all necessary equipment. The instructor will also recruit and retain color guard members, maintain positive relationships with staff and students, and encourage parent and community involvement. Additionally, participation in professional development and adherence to ministry requirements are expected.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field
  • One year of related experience preferred
  • Oklahoma State certification in Education Instruction relative to the department and grade desired
  • Native English speaker (or) the capacity to successfully pass a TOEFL Exam with instructional proficiency
  • Good communication, problem solving, and priority setting skills
  • Maintain an overall positive and professional attitude/disposition
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, and implement Color Guard activities
  • Sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, squatting, crawling, stooping, walking
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
  • Manual dexterity with the use of hands, fingers to feel objects, tools, and controls
  • Sighted with color, peripheral, near, and far vision
  • Hearing and speaking
  • Excellent English communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement color guard programs that complement and enhance the visual and musical program.
  • Work closely with the Marching Band Director and other staff members to develop a highly competitive program.
  • Attend all rehearsals and performances.
  • Instruct members in fundamental and advanced flag techniques.
  • Teach members program material.
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.
  • Coordinate the color guard rehearsal schedule with the full Marching Band.
  • Create rehearsal plans in cooperation with the Band Director.
  • Ensure the highest possible level of performance from color guard members through proper warm-up, effective preparation, and attention to individual members.
  • Prepare required reports on students and activities.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and needs.
  • Recruit potential color guard members while retaining current members.
  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with the Marching Band Director, staff, and band members.
  • Manage all equipment necessary for rehearsals and performances, including maintenance, repair, and acquisition recommendations.
  • Participate in spring semester program planning as needed.
  • Recommend new property purchases within budget allocations.
  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgrounds.
  • Encourage parent and community involvement.
  • Obtain information from parents when requested.
  • Promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
  • Participate in professional development and activities.
  • Maintain Victory protocol, policies, and procedures.
