About The Position

A Virtual Chief Information Officer (vCIO) – Healthcare is a strategic technology and business leader who serves as a trusted advisor to physician practices, senior living communities, post-acute care providers, and pharmacy organizations. This role aligns IT strategy with clinical, operational, and financial outcomes—ensuring technology enhances patient and resident care, provider productivity, medication management, regulatory compliance, and overall organizational performance across multi-site healthcare environments. The vCIO ensures technology supports safe, compliant, and scalable delivery of care while driving measurable business outcomes across diverse healthcare settings.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of: Ambulatory care and physician workflows across specialties Senior living, post-acute care, and long-term care operations Pharmacy workflows and medication management systems
  • Experience supporting multi-site, distributed healthcare environments with high availability requirements
  • Ability to connect IT strategy to: Clinical and resident outcomes Patient experience and engagement Operational efficiency and cost optimization
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to influence: Physicians, caregivers, administrators, and ownership groups
  • Balance of compliance, usability, and financial stewardship
  • Excellent communication, leadership, facilitation, and presentation skills
  • 10+ years of IT leadership experience, preferably in: Healthcare, physician practices, senior living, post-acute care, or pharmacy environments
  • Experience supporting multi-site healthcare organizations
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

  • Experience with: EHR platforms (Epic, Athenahealth, NextGen, eClinicalWorks, PointClickCare, MatrixCare) Pharmacy systems and eMAR integrations

Responsibilities

  • Maintain deep knowledge of client environments, including: EHR/PM systems (e.g., Epic, Athenahealth, NextGen, eClinicalWorks, PointClickCare, MatrixCare) Pharmacy systems (dispensing, inventory, eMAR integrations) Revenue cycle and billing systems Imaging systems (PACS) and specialty clinical devices Nurse call, care management, and medication administration systems
  • Develop and manage IT budgets aligned to: Practice growth, facility expansion, and new locations Occupancy and census trends Pharmacy operations and service line expansion
  • Create and maintain multi-year technology roadmaps focused on: Clinical and resident care quality and safety Provider and staff productivity Patient/resident access and engagement Medication accuracy and efficiency Revenue cycle performance and reimbursement optimization Multi-site standardization and scalability
  • Advise on and optimize: Clinical and caregiver workflows Medication management workflows (eMAR, pharmacy integration, dispensing automation) Revenue cycle processes Mobility solutions (tablets, handheld devices) Connectivity (enterprise Wi-Fi, redundancy, uptime for 24/7 environments)
  • Drive integration across: EHR, pharmacy, imaging, and specialty systems Clinical, operational, and financial data platforms
  • Improve data interoperability, reporting, and analytics capabilities
  • Provide guidance on healthcare regulatory requirements, including: HIPAA / HITECH CMS, MIPS, and value-based care programs Skilled nursing and post-acute regulations State pharmacy regulations and audit readiness
  • Lead cybersecurity strategy to protect PHI and sensitive data
  • Conduct IT risk assessments, business continuity planning, and downtime preparedness for care-critical environments
  • Facilitate Executive Business Reviews (EBRs) with: Physicians, administrators, operators, and executive leadership Private equity-backed ownership groups
  • Translate IT strategy into measurable outcomes: Improved patient/resident outcomes Reduced medication errors Increased provider and staff efficiency Enhanced financial performance
  • Partner with sales to: Support new client acquisition across healthcare verticals Deliver technology assessments and gap analysis with actionable recommendations
  • Identify and drive white space opportunities, including: Infrastructure modernization Cybersecurity and compliance solutions Cloud and application optimization Pharmacy and clinical system integration Multi-site standardization
  • Collaborate with leadership to develop and refine healthcare-specific service offerings
