Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED — required.
  • Allied Health Training — completion of a two‑year accredited program in Ultrasound Technology or a bachelor’s degree in a health science field (cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, nursing).
  • Clinical Ultrasound Experience — 2+ years inpatient or outpatient experience in vascular or general ultrasound.
  • Competency Progression — demonstrated advancement through strong clinical competencies or natural role progression.
  • NMRTT Licensure — active New Mexico Medical Imaging & Radiation Therapy Program license required.
  • BLS Certification — current Basic Life Support certification required.
  • ARDMS (RVT) or CCI (RVS) required.
  • candidates credentialed only in General Ultrasound must obtain ARDMS (RVT) or CCI (RVS) within one year of hire.

  • General/Vascular Ultrasound Program — graduation from an accredited program preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Independently conduct complex arterial and venous studies, applying advanced scanning techniques and expert judgment to determine when additional imaging is required.
  • Recognize, evaluate, and thoroughly document vascular abnormalities or anomalies, ensuring complete and accurate diagnostic information.
  • Utilize advanced knowledge of vascular anatomy, pathophysiology, and ultrasound principles; demonstrate strong critical‑thinking skills to analyze findings and resolve issues during examinations.
  • Complete all routine inpatient and outpatient vascular exams and assist with OR cases as needed.
  • Enter exam charges accurately in the EHR and initiate/assign preliminary reports in PACS.
  • Prepare exam rooms and equipment according to infection‑control and safety protocols; communicate clearly and appropriately with patients based on their level of understanding.
  • Maintain timely communication with physicians and nursing units regarding results; function as a cooperative team member to meet daily workflow needs.
  • Advance clinical practice through seminars, workshops, and publications; maintain all hospital, departmental, and specialty competencies.
  • Serve on vascular lab committees, support compliance with Joint Commission regulations, and keep supervisors informed of operational needs or issues.
  • Participate in candidate interviews; train and mentor new staff and students under the direction of the lead sonographer or supervisor.
  • Take part in monthly call rotations and contribute to vascular lab research protocols when applicable.
  • Carry out other responsibilities as assigned to support the overall function of the vascular lab.
