About The Position

The Varsity Cross Country Coach is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the high school cross country program. The coach will promote academic excellence, character development, sportsmanship, and athletic achievement while providing a positive and competitive experience for all student-athletes.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of training principles, race preparation, injury prevention, and athlete development.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with student-athletes, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and developing young people both on and off the course.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or ability to obtain prior to the season).
  • Completion of all required state coaching education courses.
  • Successful completion of all required background checks and district employment requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous coaching experience in cross country, track and field, or a related endurance sport is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and conduct effective daily practices and conditioning programs.
  • Develop training plans designed to improve endurance, strength, race strategy, and overall performance.
  • Teach the fundamental skills, techniques, and rules of cross country.
  • Foster an environment that emphasizes teamwork, discipline, integrity, and respect.
  • Supervise student-athletes during practices, meets, team travel, and other team activities.
  • Monitor student-athlete academic eligibility and encourage academic success.
  • Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, school administration, and the athletic department.
  • Coordinate meet schedules, transportation needs, and team logistics in collaboration with the Athletic Director.
  • Ensure the health and safety of all participants by following established emergency procedures and best practices.
  • Maintain accurate records, including attendance, meet results, uniforms, and equipment inventories.
  • Work collaboratively with middle school and youth programs to support the growth and development of the cross country program.
  • Promote the program within the school and community to encourage participation and school spirit.
  • Adhere to all school, district, conference, and state athletic association policies and regulations.
  • Attend required coaches' meetings, professional development opportunities, and athletic department events.
  • Assist with fundraising activities and community engagement initiatives as needed.
