About The Position

Provides safe and timely transportation to individuals with disabilities between their residences and day program sites. This role ensures the human dignity, rights, and liberties of Agency program participants are safeguarded. The Van Driver adheres to all applicable Regional Transit Authority (GATRA) and Agency regulations, policies, and procedures, as well as state and local laws in the operation of vehicles. They maintain consistent and clear communication with the Director of Transportation, Transportation Manager, and other designated staff. Basic proficiency with technology, including text messaging, company email, and time clock procedures, is expected. The driver provides safe and timely pick-up and drop-off of specified program participants, following authorized routes, schedules, and procedures. Assistance is provided to participants requiring help entering or leaving the vehicle, and escorts are provided to those needing additional assistance to or from the vehicle. The driver checks and responds to messages in a timely manner before beginning morning and afternoon routes and completes and submits all required paperwork, including attendance sheets and vehicle checklists. Attendance at training sessions, staff meetings, and related programs is required. The driver is responsible for maintaining the internal and external cleanliness of the vehicle and ensuring that snow and ice are removed from the assigned vehicle after winter storms. The role also includes serving as a mandated reporter for suspected cases of abuse and/or neglect to the Disabled Persons Protection Commission (DPPC). Safe driving practices are maintained at all times, including the removal of snow and ice from the assigned vehicle during adverse or inclement weather conditions.

Requirements

  • Successful completion or drug test/driving record before hiring.
  • No use of drugs including THC (marijuana).
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be able to respond appropriately to auditory stimulus without visual cues.
  • Ability to follow directions and read maps.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in both verbal and written form with coworkers and supported individuals and read fluently.
  • Valid driver’s license in the state of Massachusetts required.
  • Documented physical indicating fitness for job.
  • Successful completion of all state and Agency mandated training that is required upon hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience providing transportation services for individuals with disabilities preferred.
  • Ability to perform wheelchair securing protocols should you be wheelchair certified.

Responsibilities
