About The Position
Bay Aging is seeking part-time Van Drivers in Middlesex, Virginia. The role ensures Bay Transit passengers receive safe, timely transportation to work, retail, medical, legal, educational, and recreational destinations, or delivers meals to Bay Aging clients. The position reports to the Regional Transit Operations Supervisor and pays $16.25 per hour. Drivers follow scheduled routes, support passenger safety and accessibility, communicate with dispatch, and complete fare collection and required paperwork. The job requires operating a 12-passenger transit bus and driving approximately 300 miles per shift. Work is performed on the bus and cannot be performed virtually.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license and excellent driving record.
- Ability to operate a 12-passenger transit bus safely and drive about 300 miles per shift.
- Ability to read a map.
- Ability to interact courteously with passengers.
- Ability to handle small amounts of cash accurately and responsibly.
- Working knowledge of electronic tablets and two-way radios.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions when working with vehicles and transporting passengers.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds, walk, climb stairs, assist passengers, and push wheelchairs.
- Ability to work a flexible Monday-through-Friday schedule, with occasional night and weekend work.
Responsibilities
- Pick up and drop off passengers according to schedules in RouteMatch, or deliver meals to Bay Aging clients.
- Ensure passengers fasten their seatbelts.
- Assist passengers with special needs when entering and exiting the bus.
- Secure wheelchairs.
- Maintain contact with the dispatcher using a two-way radio and tablet.
- Accommodate last-minute route changes when instructed by the dispatcher.
- Keep the bus clean inside and out.
- Collect fares or transit tickets and complete appropriate paperwork.
- Complete a time card accurately each day.
- Drive safely and efficiently using experience and knowledge of the service area.
- Work with dispatchers and schedulers to provide passengers with safe and timely rides.
- Consult the dispatcher when deviating from the manifest.
