About The Position

The Veterans Services Transportation Program is dedicated to removing transportation barriers so Veterans can access the medical care they have earned through their military service. Transportation Drivers are ambassadors of Fond du Lac County Veterans Services and are expected to provide every Veteran with safe, respectful, and compassionate service. This is a flexible, as-needed position where transportation assignments are offered based on driver availability. Drivers create their own schedules by accepting trips that fit their availability. Typical operating hours are Monday through Friday, with no guaranteed minimum number of hours.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to safely operate passenger vans.
  • Ability to pass required background checks and motor vehicle record review.
  • Ability to lift and assist with mobility devices such as walkers and wheelchairs, if needed.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Dependable, punctual, and compassionate.
  • Safe defensive driving practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to use a cell phone for communication and scheduling.
  • Basic knowledge of Wisconsin roadways and navigation.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior Military Service
  • Experience working with Veterans, older adults, or individuals with disabilities.
  • Previous professional driving experience.
  • CPR and First Aid certification

Responsibilities

  • Safely transport Veterans to and from VA medical appointments using a county-owned vehicle.
  • Pick up Veterans at their residence and return them safely after their appointment.
  • Wait for Veterans during their medical appointments when required.
  • Assist passengers entering and exiting the vehicle as needed while maintaining their dignity and independence.
  • Maintain courteous, professional, and respectful interactions with Veterans, family members, VA staff, and County personnel.
  • Communicate availability to the Transportation Coordinator.
  • Promptly notify the Transportation Coordinator of scheduling changes, delays, vehicle issues, or emergencies.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report maintenance concerns.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and ensure it is fueled and ready for service.
  • Follow all County policies, traffic laws, and vehicle safety regulations.
  • Protect the confidentiality of Veteran information in accordance with applicable privacy laws and County policy.
  • Complete required trip documentation, mileage logs, and other records accurately and timely.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
