$95,000 - $125,000Remote

About The Position

We are Skyward, a people-centered business with a desire to serve others, driven by a love for improvement and human advancement through information technology. We are a diverse, unified, creative, and collaborative team. Our culture erases the line between work and life, fostering an environment where work happens inside of life. We stand by our values of Integrity, Compassion, Inquisitiveness, Unconventionality, and Authenticity. We are looking for a UI/UX Designer who also ships code, someone who can seamlessly transition from user research and wireframing to building production-ready front-end code. If you are motivated to learn, grow, and be part of a future-looking team, we encourage you to apply.

Requirements

  • A portfolio showcasing both design thinking (research, IA, journeys) and design craft (clean, usable, beautiful interfaces).
  • Real front-end engineering skill, comfortable building responsive, accessible interfaces in React with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Fluency in modern design tooling, with Figma as a primary tool, and experience with collaboration tools like Mural or Dovetail.
  • A working command of Human-Centered Design principles, including user research, usability testing, prototyping, and synthesis.
  • Genuine accessibility expertise, understanding 508 and WCAG 2.0 and designing with them from the outset.
  • Experience with the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) or other government/enterprise design systems.
  • Empathy for users and the ability to design for the user in front of you.
  • A sense of humor and a low ego, with the ability to share work early and take feedback gracefully.

Nice To Haves

  • A track record designing for data-heavy or AI-driven products, such as dashboards, search, chat interfaces, or knowledge tools.
  • Federal or civic-tech experience.
  • Experience shipping products within an agile agency environment.

Responsibilities

  • Turn research into design by running interviews, building personas, and mapping customer journeys and service blueprints to drive decisions.
  • Design and build interfaces, moving from wireframes and prototypes in Figma to production-ready front-end code in React (HTML/CSS/JavaScript).
  • Make complex data understandable by crafting interactive dashboards, knowledge-graph explorers, and visualizations.
  • Build every interface to Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 (A & AA) standards for accessibility.
  • Champion the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) and federal design standards.
  • Test ideas and gather feedback through usability sessions and iterate with a learn, build, measure mindset.
  • Organize content, navigation, and layout to optimize information architecture.
  • Instrument experiences with web analytics to measure user behavior and inform improvements.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision insurance (fully paid for employees)
  • 15 days of paid leave
  • 7 days of sick leave
  • 2 days bereavement leave
  • 11 paid Federal holidays
  • Up to 40 hours for jury duty

  • Up to 4 weeks of paid paternity and maternity leave
  • Company provided laptop
  • $5,000 per year for professional development
  • $600 per year for technical supplies and equipment
  • $2,000 referral bonus
