About The Position

The UX Designer is an individual contributor on Patagonia’s User Experience team, responsible for designing complex digital experiences that support the company’s purpose and values. The role combines hands-on design execution with strategy, alignment, and decision-making. It requires translating ambiguous user and business needs, technical constraints, and environmental responsibility into clear, scalable design direction across channels, platforms, and customer journeys. The designer will apply research, analytical, and systems-thinking approaches to identify root causes, assess tradeoffs, and recommend solutions, including in problem spaces where information is incomplete or precedent is limited. The role supports senior UX designers and creative leadership and involves influencing cross-functional partners and senior stakeholders through clear communication, facilitation, and principled design decisions.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of UX design experience, including ownership of complex digital product or service experiences from discovery through delivery.
  • A portfolio demonstrating advanced UX craft, strong product thinking, clear problem framing, and flexible application of UX principles and methods in ambiguous or unusual circumstances.
  • Strong interaction design, systems thinking, and information architecture skills, including the ability to simplify complexity across connected experiences.
  • Experience creating user flows, wireframes, prototypes, journey maps, and interaction patterns for complex digital experiences.
  • Proficiency with modern design and prototyping tools such as Figma.
  • Strong understanding of responsive design, accessibility, usability standards, and inclusive design practices.
  • Experience leading or partnering on qualitative and quantitative research, usability testing, concept validation, and synthesis, and translating findings into prioritized design recommendations.
  • Experience influencing product direction through design rationale, stakeholder facilitation, evidence-based recommendations, and clear storytelling.
  • Experience collaborating with product management, engineering, research, brand, analytics, and business partners to balance user needs, operational realities, and technical feasibility.
  • Ability to evaluate complex information, identify root causes, connect patterns across systems, and make sound decisions when precedent is limited.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with senior partners and non-design stakeholders, and to advise, persuade, and educate through challenging design decisions.
  • Ability to build trust, navigate differing perspectives, and facilitate alignment across cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work independently in ambiguity, set direction, manage competing priorities, and know when to seek input or escalate decisions.
  • Motivation to do work that serves people and the planet, with curiosity, care, and accountability.
  • Ability to build strong relationships, communicate clearly, seek feedback, and recognize others’ contributions.
  • Ability to deliver quality work, persist through obstacles, and follow through on commitments.
  • Ability to connect work to broader goals, make sound decisions, learn quickly, and model Patagonia’s Core Values.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing for e-commerce, retail, marketplaces, loyalty, content, or other complex digital ecosystems.
  • Experience contributing to design systems at scale, including pattern governance, documentation, and cross-team adoption.
  • Exposure to sustainability-focused, purpose-driven, or values-led organizations.
  • Openness to emerging AI-enabled tools such as Claude when they improve research synthesis, ideation, or workflow efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to UX design strategy and execution across complex cross-functional initiatives, from discovery and problem framing through final delivery.
  • Translate user needs, business goals, technical constraints, and Patagonia’s mission into experience strategies and practical design solutions.
  • Define and evolve design approaches, frameworks, and interaction patterns, deciding when to extend existing patterns or create new ones.
  • Create user flows, wireframes, prototypes, service moments, and interaction models for clear, intuitive, and accessible experiences.
  • Partner on user research, usability testing, concept validation, and synthesis, translating findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, researchers, brand teams, and sustainability experts to align priorities, make tradeoffs, and deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Communicate design rationale to stakeholders at multiple levels, including senior partners and non-design audiences.
  • Facilitate design reviews, working sessions, and decision-making conversations to help teams reach shared direction.
  • Contribute to and evolve the design system to support consistency, usability, accessibility, and long-term maintainability.
  • Advocate for responsible design practices that minimize harm, support inclusion, and reflect Patagonia’s values.
