About The Position

Performs a variety of essential job functions for the Facilities Management Services department at Goucher College. This includes driving college vehicles to transport people and equipment, performing basic building maintenance such as replacing light bulbs, and assisting with furniture and equipment moves. The role also involves campus grounds maintenance, including trash cleanup, debris removal, planting, weeding, drain cleaning, and snow removal. Additionally, the Utility Worker is responsible for operating various landscape equipment and ensuring all duties are performed safely and efficiently, with a focus on clear communication and independent decision-making.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Approximately 1 year of experience where driving passengers was a primary responsibility.
  • Possess a valid CDL license with a Passenger Endorsement in the state of Maryland.
  • Maintain a clean driving record.
  • Ability to perform body movements including frequent standing, walking, bending, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability to occasionally kneel, climb, and work with arms extended above shoulder height.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs from floor to knuckle.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs from 12" to knuckle.
  • Ability to lift 75lbs from knuckle to shoulder.
  • Ability to lift 75lbs from shoulder to overhead.
  • Ability to work within campus buildings and on campus grounds.
  • Ability to access crawl spaces, attics, roofs, and tight locations within the building envelope.
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand-operated equipment.
  • Must perform all duties in a safe manner, asking for assistance when needed.
  • Ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a Goucher College vehicle to fulfill transportation requests for the Facilities Management Services department.
  • Maintain knowledge of assigned bus/van trips.
  • Complete a vehicle inspection log before every departure to ensure safety and operational status.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of assigned vehicles daily, including removing trash and debris after each use.
  • Follow college procedures for inspecting and maintaining vehicle safety and performance.
  • Inspect designated campus building areas for out-of-order lights and replace bulbs/lamps.
  • Inspect lamps and ballasts to determine replacement needs or ballast deficiencies.
  • Monitor building locations for scheduled bulb/lamp maintenance.
  • Disassemble, assemble, move, and transport furniture and office equipment as per work orders.
  • Successfully move office furniture and accessories such as tables, chairs, desks, and boxes.
  • Ensure organization and timeliness in completing work orders.
  • Move and transport items safely and in a manner that prevents damage.
  • Assist in the maintenance of campus grounds, including trash cleanup, debris removal, planting, weeding, drain cleaning, and snow removal.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Complete work orders and associated paperwork (trip forms, work orders, vehicle inspection forms) and submit them daily.
  • Operate various equipment and power equipment, including weed eaters, power edgers, power mowers, sprayers, water wheel, field paint machine, snow blower, hand tools, and ladders.
  • Coordinate and review work, requiring independent interpretation and decision-making.
  • Communicate with various levels of the college community and outside agencies via face-to-face, telephone, and written methods.

Benefits

  • The starting rate for this position is $21.11 per hour.
