About The Position

The Utility Worker is responsible for performing a variety of operating belt presses, routine cleaning, maintenance and repair to tanks, drains, culverts, grounds, buildings, and associated structures. This role involves monitoring operating conditions, meters, and gauges, recording operational data, and operating belt presses to process and dispose of waste. The position requires cleaning and maintaining equipment, tanks, grounds, and other work areas while adhering to environmental regulations and safety standards. The Utility Worker will tend to automatic and semi-automatic machines and related equipment, monitor control panels, and adjust valves and gates. They will also perform field and lab tests, manual labor such as filling and emptying bins, and minor maintenance tasks. Additionally, the role involves operating vehicles for plant operations, practicing good housekeeping, and ensuring compliance with all work practices, policies, and procedures. The Utility Worker must adhere to specifications and production schedules and assist in other plant areas as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing (operational, process, safety and quality Instructions).
  • Ability to perform basic math.
  • Must have the ability to quickly learn how to safely operate specialized machinery for care of roads, grounds, galleries, structures and facilities.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Employee Orientation, Departmental Operating Procedures, Safety, OSHA and Quality Training.
  • Must become proficient in the care and use of all site specific, facility required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), including gas detectors, confined space equipment, etc.
  • Forklift training and site qualification.
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch and enter confined spaces.
  • Will be required to use ladders or stairs.
  • Must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (occasionally 60 pounds).
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Requires close visual observation to detect process non-conformance and machine malfunction.
  • Must wear PPE including but not limited to safety-toed boots, safety glasses, and a hard hat.

Nice To Haves

  • At least six months experience in a related position and environment preferred.
  • Experience with a variety of machinery, vehicles, material handling equipment, hand and power tools preferred.
  • May perform more advanced functions under supervision as part of training and development.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor operating conditions, meters, and gauges.
  • Record meter and gauge readings and operational data.
  • Operate belt presses to process and dispose of waste.
  • Clean and maintain equipment, tanks, grounds and other work areas.
  • Follow the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and State of Florida regulations.
  • Ensure safety standards are met.
  • Tend to automatic and semi-automatic machines and related equipment including pumps, engines, mixers, valves, conveyors, and chemical feed.
  • Monitor control panels and adjust valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow.
  • Monitor flow meters, gauges, flow ratios, pressures and related controls through instrument panels, computer terminals and programmable logic control units in assigned areas.
  • Monitor and record operating conditions observations and data in area shift log.
  • Ensure conformance to process specifications.
  • Inspect equipment and identify operational problems; report suspecting malfunctions and variances to the supervisor or designee.
  • Perform field tests (chemical, physical and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process or alter unit processes.
  • Monitor process chemical supplies and recommends reorder.
  • Perform lab tests applicable to operational optimization and related reports per procedure.
  • Perform manual labor including filling and emptying of machine bins and cleaning equipment, facilities and grounds as required.
  • Perform minor maintenance including, but not limited to, routine preventive maintenance, lubrication and minor adjustments under guidance of the supervisor or designee.
  • Operate vehicles for plant operational purposes.
  • Practice good housekeeping in assigned areas and properly dispose of waste according to safety and environmental policies.
  • Model compliance with all work practices, policies and procedures.
  • Follow established operational, process control, safety and emergency response procedures.
  • Adhere to specifications and production schedule.
  • Assist in other areas of the plant as needed.
