About The Position

Bird-Johnson, a Fairbanks Morse Defense Company, is seeking a Utility Worker Technician II in Walpole, MA. This is a full-time, 1st shift position. This role is crucial for a skilled manufacturing team responsible for protecting, preparing, inspecting, and packaging large, high-value propulsion components before they are shipped to military and commercial customers. The position requires mechanical aptitude, a strong work ethic, a safety-first attitude, and flexibility to support various team needs. This is not a typical utility worker position; it involves direct contribution to mission-critical components that support the U.S. Navy and commercial vessels.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 0–2 years of experience in manufacturing, mechanical, warehouse, construction, automotive, military, or other hands-on technical environments preferred
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and a desire to learn a skilled trade
  • Ability to follow work instructions, safety procedures, and quality standards
  • Ability to wear required PPE and work around manufacturing materials and chemicals used in the process
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening
  • A positive attitude, dependable attendance, and commitment to continuous improvement
  • Comfortable standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and moving throughout the shift
  • Ability to safely lift and maneuver materials weighing up to 50 pounds with assistance from overhead hoists, cranes, and forklifts (training provided)
  • Works well with others and contributes to a team-first culture
  • U.S. Citizenship Required (due to access to Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information - U-NNPI)
  • Must provide proof of citizenship through a valid U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate, or Naturalization Certificate
  • Dual citizenship is not permitted (NOFORN requirement)

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the inspection of precision mechanical components, ensuring quality and attention to detail
  • Building custom wooden crates and packaging large marine propulsion components for safe shipment around the world
  • Wrapping and protecting large propellers and critical components before delivery to our customers
  • Performing touch-up painting and preparing components for assembly or shipment
  • Preparing tools, materials, and equipment for the Assembly team
  • Supporting various areas of the manufacturing floor, including material handling and maintaining a clean, safe workspace
  • Assisting wherever needed to help the team meet customer commitments and delivery schedules
