We’re looking for a motivated Utility Worker I to join our team supporting SMUD’s service area. Your work will include setting up meeting and event spaces, maintaining cleanliness, performing grounds upkeep, operating equipment and vehicles, and assisting trades teams with labor support. You’ll help ensure that our buildings and work environments stay organized, safe, and ready to support our mission. As a Utility Worker I, you’ll work both independently and with others to keep SMUD’s facilities running smoothly. Your efforts support our commitment to safety, teamwork, and quality service, essential elements that help us deliver clean, affordable energy to our community every day. Purpose A Utility Worker I provides services performing a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled duties. They may assist skilled technical labor in the performance of their assignments in duties that are of an unskilled or semi-skilled nature. Nature and Scope Employees in this classification are assigned to perform non-skilled and semi-skilled assignments independently and within a team environment. Work assignments typically require providing services and interaction with SMUD customers and employees throughout SMUD’s service area and facilities. General scope of work is Custodial, Grounds, Material Handling/Delivery, Workstations/Space configuration, Waste & Recycle collection/disposal, and General Labor.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years or more of progressively responsible relevant work experience of facility systems in the maintenance, installation, repair or construction of external and internal building components and/or systems.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Drivers License and a satisfactory driving record not more than two moving violations in the last two years.
  • A Class A Drivers license may be required and in addition, the position may require a hazardous materials and tanker endorsements within six 6 months of hire.
  • Candidates appointed to positions requiring the possession/retention of a Class A Drivers license must undergo an initial drug and alcohol screen and submit to random drug and alcohol screens as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation DOT.
  • Understanding of maintenance procedures; knowledge of SMUD policies and procedures related to administration, functions, services, departments, divisions, personnel, contracting, and procurement, assigning and reviewing work assignments; principles and practices for motivating, and coaching.
  • Work in a service oriented environment on as a team member.
  • Read and interpret written instructions, such as work orders, tailboards and diagrams.
  • Retain, remember and follow a series of directions, oral and written; perform physically strenuous and unskilled and semi-skilled tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Able to learn and perform semi-skilled to technical assignments independently; work with contractors and vendors.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience supporting operations or maintenance in hydroelectric, power generation, or utility facilities.
  • Comfortable working at remote sites with minimal supervision, managing your time and priorities effectively.
  • Familiar with basic trades like HVACR, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire safety, painting, and general maintenance support.
  • Strong focus on safety, following industry procedures like lockout/tagout and hazard awareness.
  • Able to work well independently and as part of a team to keep operations running smoothly and safely.

Responsibilities

  • Performs event, conference and meeting room configurations/setups. Setups include arranging tables, chairs, signs, displays, stages and modular wall systems to accommodate the various room configurations and meetings.
  • Performs special event setups to include stages, banners, signs, fencing, BBQ’s, tents, tables, chairs, and other miscellaneous items as needed.
  • Performs custodial work; general cleaning, moping, empties trash and recyclables into appropriate containers, dumpsters and compactors.
  • Operates and empties hydraulic/electric cardboard and recyclable balers.
  • Performs inspections of fire life safety equipment such as; fire extinguishers and emergency eyewash stations.
  • Operates small motorized equipment, mowers, yard sweeping equipment, forklifts, back hoes, aerial lifts and small cranes.
  • Performs tasks for grounds such as, trimming, mowing, edging, digging, sweeping, leaf removal, weed abatement, debris pickup/disposal.
  • Paints by brush, roller or spray. Operates a paint spray gun for painting signs, name plates, transformers and other various projects as needed.
  • Performs the installation and modification of workstations, including height adjustment of desktops and reconfigurations.
  • Performs the installation and modification of Ergotrons and sit-to-stand ergo workstations.
  • Pickup and relocate employee’s materials and supplies for moves including; chairs, boxes, books, tools and equipment.
  • Operates SMUD vehicles, including small, medium and large size trucks that may require special licenses. Utilize trailers to move equipment, materials and equipment safely throughout SMUD.
  • Operate and maintain powered hand tools and equipment used in the performance of their duties.
  • Supports and assist on a team or independently the crafts and other trades with labor for non-technical, semi-skilled work assignments as needed.
  • Logs and documents records as required for compliance.
