Reporting through various levels and types of supervision, the Utility Treatment Technician, Wastewater Treatment performs daily activities relating to controlling the Wastewater Treatment process, which impacts the quality of effluent. This may include performance of safe work practices, daily maintenance, laboratory, administration, special study, or duties with respect to lift stations, lagoons, septage receiving stations, compost facility, and Wastewater Treatment facilities. The incumbent must work to ensure compliance with various municipal, provincial and federal regulations at all times. Good judgement is required to maintain a positive impact on regulatory compliance, municipal operations, municipal image, and the health of residents and the environment.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalency is required.
  • Level I Wastewater Treatment Certification.
  • One (1) years’ experience as per AEP experience requirements.
  • Skilled in the operation of machines, tools, and mobile equipment used in municipal Wastewater Treatment facilities under varying conditions.
  • Proficiency in the use of various sampling and testing equipment and instruments.
  • Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions, read and interpret blueprints, drawings, plans and specifications.
  • Communicate respectfully with co-workers and the ability to maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.
  • Demonstrate dependability and reliability by having the ability to work with varying degrees of supervision, including some tasks with no direct supervision.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in applicable occupational health and safety regulations and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
  • Proficiency with various Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to utilize office equipment.
  • Math and numeracy skills for calculations relating to volume, flow, chemical dosage, etc.
  • Ability to provide a Criminal Record Check for review and acceptance.
  • A valid Class five (5) Operator’s License is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.

Responsibilities

  • Operate Wastewater Treatment facilities and lift stations within certification level scope, AEP approvals, and municipal, provincial, and federal regulations.
  • Operate and maintain the compost system, screenings/grit removal, and the solids process including centrifuges and lift stations.
  • Monitor, respond, investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve efficiency issues, operational issues, quality control issues, alarms, and complaints.
  • Complete daily records and submit data for reports.
  • Assist with inspecting and monitoring equipment and infrastructure to ensure efficient operation according to manufacturers’ specifications, internal preventive maintenance program standards, and municipal engineering standards.
  • Monitor the operation of emergency power generation equipment and standby power source to ensure the continuous operation of treatment facilities.
  • Use, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment.
  • Arrange for maintenance issues to be corrected by creating maintenance notifications.
  • Create, maintain, and revise all safety, emergency response, and Wastewater Treatment policies, documents, and procedures.
  • Provide assistance to other RMWB departments and on-the-job contractors as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
