About The Position

The Utility Trainer, Arborist Skills is responsible for supporting educational and training initiatives, specializing in utility arborist skills programs, to deliver hands-on training for various tree work tasks to field employees, and may include providing training or support for management on tree work techniques and equipment. This role involves planning and facilitating training workshops and modules, overseeing equipment usage, implementing safety policies, and assessing training needs. Region: the Philadelphia area including: Fenelton, Franklin, Meadville, Petrolia, Conneautville, and New Oxford, PA. Eligible candidates must live within reasonable commuting distance of this region of service

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of crew leader experience in tree care production or tree care training responsibilities.
  • Qualified arborist field experience and knowledge of advanced arboricultural techniques.
  • Completion of Davey Qualified Utility Line Clearance Arborist Training or completion within a designated period upon hire.
  • Strong knowledge of tree care safety standards and practices.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • First Aid and CPR certified.
  • Certified Arborist and Certified Tree Care Safety Professional certifications or the ability to obtain the credentials within eighteen (18) months.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to travel locally and throughout the United States and Canada (if applicable).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • The Davey Tree Expert Company provides services to government clients who conduct additional background checks of our employees. Therefore, this position requires the ability to successfully pass government-administered background checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree is preferred, however, a combination of technical experience in a similar position and industry certification(s) that demonstrates a minimum level of subject matter expertise could be used in lieu of a college degree.
  • Utility line clearance experience.
  • OSHA 10/30 hour course certification.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain a CDL.
  • Fluency in Spanish is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Health and Safety Department's educational and training initiatives, specializing in the development, implementation, delivery, and facilitation of arborist skills training programs, policies, and practices.
  • Perform major assignments related to training initiatives, using independent judgement to make decisions related to implementation, development, and delivery and providing advice based on observations and assessments.
  • Provide expert advice and consultation to managers, offering insights on policies and best practices.
  • Create and provide “Train the Trainer” educational sessions in the field with crews for instruction and hands-on training.
  • Address employee questions and provide expert advice regarding equipment and provide equipment recommendations and education.
  • Evaluate and determine whether equipment can continue to be used based on comprehensive analysis of operational conditions, safety standards, and financial impact, providing consultation and advice to find the best solution.
  • Use independent judgement to identify non-compliance with safety requirements that pose a risk to the employee or others.
  • Assist field management with the implementation of new and existing safety policies and procedures as well as tree care techniques.
  • Schedule and direct safety education and training sessions.
  • Work hands-on with trainees to learn and execute tree work tasks such as climbing trees or chainsaw use, when situationally appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Industrial Injury Prevention Specialists (IIPS) in the Industrial Athlete Program to enhance program effectiveness, streamline communication, and ensure the successful integration of initiatives, as required, depending on the regional availability of IIPS.
  • Communicate any recognized training needs with management.
  • Participate in job observations as needed to ensure program compliance, identify training gaps, and pinpoint opportunities for efficiency improvements.
  • Participate in safety tailgate meetings and other training as needed, offering insights and explanations.
  • Support response to storms and natural disasters to assist in the development and implementation of safety plans and provide training as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
