About The Position

Performs a variety of tasks involved in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of the City's wastewater collection and drinking water distribution systems. Employee's supervision is dependent on experience and license level: trainee's perform work under close supervision with minimal latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment, whereas Level III licensed operators have some flexibility in decision making with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one or more years' experience in maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.
  • Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s) preferred.
  • Class III Distribution System Operator license issued through the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection and a backflow tester and repair license is preferred.
  • If Employee does not hold preferred licenses, must obtain a "Distribution 3" license within the first 24 months of employment.
  • Regular in office attendance is required.
  • Systems Technician Trainee – This is an entry level classification that performs assigned tasks and duties learning basic functions of a Systems Technician.
  • Must obtain Water Distribution III license within 24 months.
  • Positions assigned to this classification will receive training under the direction of the Manager.
  • Systems Technician I - This is a technical level classification that performs skilled tasks and duties.
  • Positions assigned to this classification are required to possess Level "III" Distribution Systems Operator license issued by the state of Florida, Backflow Tester Certificate, must have Wastewater III (C) certificate, minimum of 2080 hours of service.
  • May be required to have or obtain additional industry certification(s) based on area of assignment.
  • Systems Technician II - This is a journey level classification that performs skilled tasks and duties.
  • Positions assigned to this classification are required to possess Level "II" Distribution Systems Operator license issued by the state of Florida and a Backflow Tester and Repair Certification.
  • May be required to have or obtain additional industry certification(s) based on area of assignment.
  • Systems Technician III - This is a senior level classification that performs highly skilled tasks and duties.
  • Positions assigned to this classification are required to possess Level "I" Distribution Systems Operator license issued by the state of Florida and a Backflow Tester and Repair Certification.
  • Class A CDL with tanker endorsement, minimum of 10400 hours of service, able to read and understand blueprints and assemble pipes, valves, fittings.
  • Able to work with engineers and answer questions for capital improvements and provide drawings.
  • Wastewater II (B) certificate.
  • Must be able to operate heavy equipment such as; backhoe, track excavators, asphalt roller, cranes, all hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and tools.
  • Must have OSHA certificates that relate to trenching/excavation, permit confined space, LOTO, and blood-born pathogens, OSHA 10-Hour training or equal.
  • May be required to have or obtain additional industry certification(s) based on area of assignment.
  • Basic to advanced knowledge of the methods, techniques, and tools used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water and wastewater systems
  • Basic to advanced knowledge of safety hazards, principles, and procedures
  • Basic to advanced knowledge of general maintenance tasks and procedures
  • Basic to advanced knowledge of ground maintenance and installation
  • Skill in working independently and following through with assignments with minimal direction
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to organize work for timely completion
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic skill level operations involving the construction, repair, and maintenance of water and/or wastewater systems
  • Performs basic maintenance and repair of vehicles, equipment, plant facilities and tools
  • Operates a variety of specialized vehicles, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of water and/or wastewater systems
  • Accurately reads and records water meters for billing purposes
  • Installs and changes meters; turns service on and off as needed
  • Performs lawn and grounds maintenance tasks
  • Cleans and maintains buildings and related equipment such as changing air filters and caring for ornamental plants, trees, and landscaping
  • Maintains fire hydrants in company service areas
  • Maintains simple records and logs; completes reports as necessary
  • Ensures that all areas are clean and free of anything that would constitute a safety hazard
  • Assists in resolving customer problems and complaints and in the collection of past due accounts
  • Assists in the construction of plant equipment and facilities
  • May be required to work weekends and holidays; may be required to respond to after hour calls
