About The Position

This position performs mid-level and advanced duties to ensure the appropriate and regulatory-compliant operation of water and wastewater systems owned by, or under the jurisdiction of, the County to serve its customers and the public. The role involves operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting various equipment, monitoring treatment processes, preparing compliance reports, and interacting with customers and technical staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Four (4) years of training and/or experience in the operation and maintenance of advanced, complex wastewater treatment facilities or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a NM Wastewater Systems Level III or Water Systems Level III certification.
  • Knowledge of physics and arithmetic of mid-level complexity.
  • Reading comprehension of mid-level complexity and writing skills.
  • Ability to learn occupational hazards and safety procedures in wastewater operations and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate powered and manual equipment, machinery, and tools used in wastewater plant operations and maintenance.
  • Ability to establish effective co-working relationships.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written communication.
  • Ability to observe safety procedures.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Drivers License.
  • Must have telephone in residence or be available by an equally effective means of communication.
  • Must be available for 24-hour emergency stand-by duties when required.
  • Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening.
  • Selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening.

  • Travel outside Santa Fe County may be required occasionally.

Responsibilities

  • Perform mid-level and advanced duties in the operation of water treatment, water storage and distribution, pump stations, biological and chemical treatment of wastewater, and treated effluent disposal and reuse.
  • Operate, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot equipment such as pumps, generators, pressurized vessels, blowers, compressors, and metering devices.
  • Monitor chemical water treatment and biological wastewater treatment systems, adjust flow rates, and adjust chemical doses.
  • Operate and troubleshoot pump controls and perform repairs on equipment.
  • Maintain clear and accurate records of activities and events.
  • Perform mid-level and advanced calculations to determine conditions associated with water treatment processes and operations.
  • Prepare Water and Waste Water Compliance reports for submission to the New Mexico Environmental Department, supervisors, and others.
  • Perform mid-level duties in customer service and relations in the field.
  • Interact with technical support staff within and outside the County.
  • Collect samples of water and wastewater in accordance with standard procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform mid-level laboratory testing on water and wastewater samples and interpret results.
  • Collect and interpret existing records, meter and gauge data, and maintain up-to-date operational logs.
  • Monitor and perform operations related to applicable regulatory compliance under general supervision.
  • Maintain treatment plant work areas, grounds, equipment, and tools to ensure a safe and health-promoting environment.
  • Report verbally and in writing about malfunctions, abnormalities, and potential hazards associated with daily operations.
  • Perform public relations duties and make presentations to the public about water and wastewater systems.
  • Provide basic training to Utility Workers and lower-level Operators on water and wastewater systems.
  • Lead critical and complex evaluations to resolve system operations and maintenance problems when necessary.
  • Clean and maintain facilities in good and health-promoting conditions.
  • Keep inventory of equipment and tools, and report losses, damage, or other conditions needing managerial attention.
  • Perform mechanical work of mid-level and advanced complexity in connection with preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment.
  • Operate road machinery and associated equipment used in daily operations.
  • Perform work orders as assigned by supervisor.
