About The Position

Assists in maintaining university utility and mechanical systems by performing preventative, predictive, and routine maintenance on chillers, boilers, generators, auxiliary equipment, and other complex mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. Responsibilities also include maintaining and monitoring steam, remote steam boilers, hot water, and chilled water distribution systems, cooling towers, mechanical systems, and related chemical treatment processes. This position works four days per week, ten hours per day. Initial schedule will be Monday–Thursday during the training period. After training is complete, the schedule will transition to Sunday–Wednesday. Schedule modifications may be required to support 24/7/365 operational needs.

Requirements

  • Nine months of technical training beyond high school and three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Requires a valid driver's license and the ability to be a qualified driver under the Universities MVR policy.
  • Knowledge of utility system operations and maintenance practices.
  • Ability to operate and utilize computer-based monitoring and control systems.
  • Ability to use computerized maintenance management system to perform assigned work orders, track time and record notes from work performed.
  • Mechanical troubleshooting - Ability to diagnose equipment failures in pumps, motors, valves, and mechanical systems.
  • Preventative and predictive maintenance - Performing inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and component replacement before failures occur.
  • Pump and motor maintenance - Alignment, seal replacement, bearing replacement, and vibration awareness.
  • Valve maintenance and repair - Knowledge of steam, water, and control valves including packing replacement and actuator troubleshooting.
  • Mechanical system installation - Installing and replacing pumps, piping components, heat exchangers, and mechanical equipment.
  • Hand and power tool proficiency - Safe and effective use of mechanical tools and diagnostic equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with chiller steam and geothermal plant operations.
  • HVAC experience.
  • Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) or similar control systems.
  • Knowledge of chilled water, steam, and geothermal plant operations.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor campus steam, electrical, hot water, and chilled water systems.
  • Perform predictive, preventative, and routine maintenance on chillers, generators, engines, fuel trains, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Monitor and respond to engine, generator, and chiller plant alarms.
  • Install new equipment and replace existing equipment as required.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment to determine required repairs, parts, materials, and supplies.
  • Assist with maintaining steam, chilled water, and hot water distribution systems.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to Utilities Systems Maintenance Assistants when needed.
  • Report abnormal conditions to Operations Managers.
