About The Position

The Spokane, Spangle & Palouse Railway is seeking a dependable and versatile Utility Specialist to support railroad operations across multiple areas, including track maintenance, signal systems, and transportation operations. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, working outdoors, and being part of a team that plays an essential role in maintaining safe and efficient railroad operations. The Utility Specialist will assist with a variety of track and signal-related activities and may also provide transportation coverage during employee vacations and other staffing needs.

Requirements

  • Dependable attendance and punctuality are essential.
  • Ability and willingness to qualify as a locomotive engineer.
  • Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, including 24/7 availability as operational needs require.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a railroad yard environment and safely perform duties in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry approximately 15–50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform physical activities including sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting, reaching, and working with hands and fingers.
  • Ability to reach above and below shoulder level and perform other physical movements necessary to safely complete assigned duties.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and following established railroad operating procedures.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of railroad track maintenance and repair activities.
  • Assist with the installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of railroad signal systems.
  • Support transportation operations as needed, including providing vacation coverage.
  • Operate locomotives and other railroad equipment in accordance with company procedures and applicable safety requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with railroad crews to maintain safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support railroad operations.
