About The Position

This position serves within INDOT’s Southeast District as the Seymour District’s Utility Engineer and subject matter expert. It requires knowledge of federal and state utility laws and regulations, and utility and railroad management. The role supports project development and leads the district’s utility coordination efforts, evaluating how potential utility relocations and railroad impacts may affect the constructability, cost, and timing of transportation projects. It serves as a technical expert in discussions with utility and railroad representatives, INDOT Area Engineers, construction personnel, environmental specialists, utility companies, and design engineers. Approximately 20% of the work involves field project meetings and firsthand review of issues. The incumbent manages a large portfolio of projects across multiple fiscal years and provides technical leadership and mentoring to utility coordinators. The role also performs broader engineering functions, including project and program planning, project reviews, engineering investigations and field observations, design and research support, technical and data analysis, testing assistance, and quality control/assurance activities. A Professional Engineering license is generally required, though an exception may be considered for an EIT or FE certification holder actively pursuing Indiana PE licensure who is applying for a lower-level classification. Candidates with an engineering degree and current EIT license who do not hold a PE may be hired at a lower minimum salary, with eligibility for promotional increases upon meeting experience and licensure milestones. A degree is not required if the candidate has at least four years of qualifying professional experience in engineering, civil engineering, transportation research, or a closely related field. The position is with INDOT’s Seymour District. It traditionally starts at an annual salary of $75,010, which may be adjusted based on education and job experience. The role may directly supervise one or more staff members. It is exempt from overtime compensation; additional hours may be required to complete essential or assigned work, and employees must report at least 75 hours per pay period of work and/or paid leave to receive their base biweekly salary.
