About The Position

This position involves multiple levels of Utility Plant Operator roles, from Trainee to III. The Trainee level focuses on receiving training to operate power plant auxiliary systems and assist in plant operations, with the goal of progressing to the Utility Plant Operator I classification. The Utility Plant Operator I assists in operating auxiliary systems and plant operations, including coal and yard operations and limited maintenance. The Utility Plant Operator II operates all plant auxiliary equipment and systems, including solid fuel boilers, and records readings to monitor equipment. The Utility Plant Operator III operates boilers, turbine driven generators, chilled water production equipment, and associated auxiliaries, coordinating operations with lower-level personnel.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions (Trainee).
  • Upon completion of the training program, must be able to meet the minimum eligibility requirements for the Utility Plant Operator I classification (Trainee).
  • High school diploma or GED (I, II, III).
  • Two years of experience in an industrial plant, process plant or power plant, operating boilers, pumps, fans, conveyors or other similar equipment (I).
  • Three years experience in an industrial plant, process plant or power plant, operating boilers, pumps, fans, conveyors or other similar equipment (II).
  • A minimum of one year experience in the operation of coal and/or gas/oil fired water tube boilers and related plant equipment including pumps, fans, conveyors and other similar equipment (II).
  • Possession of a license similar to the National Institute for the Uniform Licensing of Power Engineers (NIULPE) or State of Minnesota Second Class Engineer license or ability to become licensed within 6 months (II).
  • Four years experience in an industrial plant, process plant or power plant, operating boilers, pumps, fans, conveyors or other similar equipment (III).
  • A minimum of two years of the experience must be in the operation of coal and/or gas/oil fired water tube boilers, steam turbine generators and related plant equipment including pumps, fans, conveyors and other similar equipment (III).
  • Possession of a license similar to the National Institute for the Uniform Licensing of Power Engineers (NIULPE) or State of Minnesota First Class-A Engineer license or ability to become licensed within 6 months (III).

Responsibilities

  • Operate power plant auxiliary systems and assist in all aspects of plant operations (Trainee).
  • Participate in training required to progress to Utility Plant Operator I eligibility (Trainee).
  • Operate power plant auxiliary systems and assist in all aspects of plant operations, including coal and yard operations and limited maintenance (I).
  • Operate all plant auxiliary equipment and systems (II).
  • Operate solid fuel boilers (II).
  • Make rounds and record readings throughout the plant to monitor all plant equipment (II).
  • Operate boilers, turbine driven generators, chilled water production equipment, and associated auxiliaries (III).
  • Coordinate power plant equipment operations with Utility Plant Operator II and I personnel (III).
