About The Position

The Utility Person is responsible for various functions within the packaging and food safety operations. This role involves preparing materials for packaging lines, assembling and taping cartons, managing finished goods, maintaining a clean work environment, and adhering to safety and food safety protocols. The position also includes assisting with grinding operations and providing break coverage for other team members. The Utility Person must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily, with reasonable accommodations made for individuals with disabilities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • 1-2 years of related experience and/or training preferred
  • Experience in plastics or packaging industry a plus
  • Working knowledge of computer operating systems
  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision.
  • Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand and walk on concrete.
  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, bend, or twist.
  • Occasionally required to push, pull, and/or move materials.
  • Must be able to work assigned shifts, including working overtime and attending after hour meetings as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Bring unassembled cartons from staging area to taping station for assigned lines.
  • Assemble cartons and tape them per packing instructions.
  • Place preassembled empty cartons on each line for easy access by Packer-Trimmer-Inspectors.
  • Close up and tape shut full boxes after they have been packed.
  • Mark label and carton neatly with correct carton number and any other special coding information.
  • Keep track of the number of cartons produced per line for the total shift period and report to the Packaging Supervisor.
  • Place finished cartons on pallet or slip sheet as required by instructions.
  • Apply correct banding or stretch wrap to stacked cartons per shipping specifications.
  • Keep assigned areas clean, neat, and orderly.
  • Operate forklift trucks if authorized by the Packaging Supervisor and possess a tow motor license (training provided if necessary).
  • Conduct him/herself in a safe manner and adhere to all required safety protocols and policies.
  • Wear PPE properly in accordance with company standards.
  • Keep the area around the workstation clean and free from dirt and debris.
  • Clean all line equipment, unjam grinders and assist in clean up and grinding of excess materials.
  • Give breaks to Packer-Trimmer-Inspectors as required.
  • Monitor and verify activities to ensure that all products meet food safety standards.
  • Comply with all company food safety and quality assurance procedures and document data correctly.
  • Ensure all work product contact surfaces are restored to sanitary condition after any job completion.
  • Report any product or process failures that could impact food safety to Quality and/or Line/Maintenance Supervision.
