About The Position

The Utility Person is responsible for all the below functions. The ESSENTIAL functions are designated because they will consume more working time daily than the SECONDARY functions. This role involves bringing unassembled cartons, assembling and taping them, ensuring proper packaging, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. Additionally, the Utility Person may be involved in grinding excess materials, providing breaks to other team members, and ensuring food safety standards are met.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • 1-2 years of related experience and/or training preferred
  • Experience in plastics or packaging industry a plus
  • Working knowledge of computer operating systems
  • Ability to assess and initiate things independently with limited supervision required.
  • Ability to manage resources to get things done and the ability to perform multiple activities to accomplish goals doing more than required or requested in the job.
  • Plans for upcoming problems or opportunities and takes appropriate action.
  • Is proactive and anticipates events well in advance to ensure successful outcome.

Responsibilities

  • Bring unassembled cartons from staging area to taping station for your assigned lines.
  • Assemble cartons and tape them per the packing instructions for the item that is running on your assigned lines.
  • Make only enough cartons to be used on your shift per machine plus 20% for the next shift.
  • Place preassembled empty cartons (with unopened liners) on each line where Packer-Trimmer-Inspectors can have easy access to them.
  • Keep cartons neat and orderly.
  • Close up and tape shut (or bundle up) full boxes as soon as possible after a Packer-Trimmer-Inspector has completed packing them.
  • Make sure liner(s) are properly folded or tied per instruction to prevent dust contamination of the finished goods.
  • Mark label and carton neatly with correct carton number and any other special coding information.
  • Keep track (on a check-off sheet) of the number of cartons produced per line for the total shift period.
  • Report the total number of cartons per each machine to the Packaging Supervisor at the end of the shift.
  • Place finished cartons on pallet or slip sheet as required by instructions.
  • Cartons are to be numbered and stacked in the order they were produced, labels always facing out.
  • Always stack cartons in straight and neat rows.
  • Apply correct banding or stretch wrap to stacked cartons per shipping specifications.
  • Keep the assigned area clean, neat, and orderly.
  • Conduct him/herself in a safe manner and adhering to all required safety protocols and policies.
  • Wear PPE properly in accordance with company standards.
  • Keep the area around your workstation clean and free from dirt and debris; this may include cleaning assigned areas of the building or pieces of equipment as instructed by your Supervisor.
  • Must be able to work assigned shifts, including working overtime and attending after hour meetings as needed.
  • May be required to perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
  • Clean all line equipment, unjam grinders and assist in clean up and grinding of excess materials.
  • Give breaks to Packer-Trimmer-Inspectors as required.
  • Monitor and verify activities to ensure that all products coming in and out of the facility meet food safety standards in addition to quality standards.
  • Comply with all company food safety and quality assurance procedures and document data correctly at all times.
  • Ensure all work product contact surfaces are restored to sanitary condition after any job completion.
  • Report any product or process failures that could impact food safety of manufactured product to Quality and/or Line/Maintenance Supervision.
