About The Position
The Utilities Operator Trainee is an entry-level position responsible for assisting with the operation and maintenance of the City’s water distribution system, wastewater treatment facilities, and related utility infrastructure. This position provides on-the-job training under licensed operators and prepares the employee for TCEQ certification and advancement.
Requirements
- Willingness to learn water and wastewater operations
- Ability to follow instructions and work in a team environment
- Basic mechanical aptitude
- Dependability and strong work ethic
- Ability to work outdoors and perform physical labor
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to obtain TCEQ certification within 6 months
Nice To Haves
- Mechanical, plumbing, or utility experience
- TCEQ Class D Water or Wastewater License
Responsibilities
- Assist with daily water and wastewater system operations
- Learn to monitor pumps, blowers, valves, and treatment processes
- Assist with water and wastewater sampling and testing
- Record operational data and support reporting requirements
- Assist with inspections and basic maintenance of equipment
- Support cleaning of facilities, tanks, and work areas
- Assist with flushing, leak response, and service issues
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas
- Attend required training and pursue TCEQ certification
- Follow safety procedures and standard operating procedures
- Learn regulatory requirements for water and wastewater systems
- Respond to alarms, system failures, and emergency events
- Participate in after-hours call-outs as training progresses
- Assist during severe weather and emergency operations
- Perform other related duties as assigned
