Utility Meter Technician
About The Position
Performs routine field, specialized technical, and manual work in the collection of meter readings and support of field operations. An employee in this class performs entry-level and routine tasks related to the reading of water meters and assisting with the maintenance of customer accounts and meter assets. Work includes meter reading, basic service orders, and assisting with meter installations and change outs. The employee follows established routes and procedures while operating a City vehicle and using electronic reading devices. Work is performed under close to general supervision of the Field Operations Manager and is evaluated for accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to established procedures.
Requirements
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Some experience in field operations, customer service, or related work preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- The position is subject to the City’s cell phone reimbursement policy and therefore requires that the employee provide a data enabled phone for use in carrying out assigned duties.
Responsibilities
- Reads water meters on an assigned route
- Records meter readings into a handheld device
- Communicates service orders to the water billing department and takes photos of equipment for use in accurately establishing water services
- Explains meter readings to citizens and answers questions of a general nature related to consumption
- Cleans meters and reports damaged or malfunctioning equipment to supervisor
- Assists with meter installations, change outs, and service connections
- Assists field operations with hydrant flushing, mowing, and related work
- Operates City vehicle safely and efficiently; maintains vehicle and submits service requests as needed
- Performs other field operations related duties as assigned
