About The Position

The City of Sarasota is seeking a Utility Mechanic I, II, or III to inspect, maintain, repair, and overhaul pumps, machinery, electrical equipment, piping, meters, and related mechanical equipment used in the City's facilities and systems. This role also involves operating heavy maintenance and automotive equipment for public works infrastructure. The specific level (I, II, or III) will be determined by the candidate's experience and qualifications. Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Three years of experience in disciplines relating to public works and water utility operations, such as welding, millwright, plumbing, pump repair, pipelaying, heavy equipment operation, and machine operation.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class "B" or higher State of Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Ability to tolerate, ascend and descend equipment with "high-rise" operators stations.
  • Skill in the use and maintenance of tools used in the maintenance and repair of treatment facility machinery and related equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, sketches, drawings, maps, and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of the methods, tools, and materials used in the maintenance, servicing, and repair of pumps, motors, gear drives, and related water and wastewater treatment facilities machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to locate, diagnose, and evaluate causes of equipment failure.
  • Ability to work overtime and/or be on call.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Public Works staff, staff of other City Departments and Offices, and the general public.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to respond courteously and responsively to questions relating to the purpose and scope of repairs and similar questions.
  • Ability to explain aspects of the operation and functioning of the City's Water and Wastewater Treatment Facilities mechanical equipment and systems.

  • Tanker Endorsement, assignment in Distribution or Collection, Facility Maintenance, Plant & Lift Stations Maintenance.
  • A current ISA certification as an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic (CIMM) or similar certification in Industrial Maintenance, assignment in Plant & Lift Station Maintenance.
  • A current Building Systems Maintenance Certification (SMC) through BOMA or similar current certification in facilities maintenance, assignment in Facilities Maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, modifies, and repairs a wide variety of mechanical and electrical equipment in the City's water and wastewater collection, distribution, treatment, and related facilities and systems, including pumps, compressors, valves, motors, engines, controllers, conveyor systems, and mechanical drives.
  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance inspections and procedures on various mechanical and electrical components of the water and wastewater systems, as well as other equipment.
  • Installs and maintains chemical feed systems, including chlorine, caustic soda, alum, methanol, deodorant, methane gas, polymer, and aquashade systems.
  • Inspects, records, and utilizes charts, dials, gauges, meters, and other monitors to determine pressure conditions, flow and feed rates, and other operating conditions, performing routine adjustments as needed.
  • Performs a variety of service activities related to the water and wastewater distribution and collection systems, such as digging trenches for mains, excavating for services and hydrants, locating valves and blowouts in water mains, and making repairs.
  • Performs routine electric and/or acetylene welding, brazing, and/or soldering repairs and fabrications as required.
  • Checks, adjusts, and maintains equipment service records.
  • Prepares routine reports and maintains daily records and logs.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints as required to repair, maintain, or build equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, spare parts, and other required materials, initiating orders or recommendations for required parts and equipment or additional stock.
  • May standby for and answer emergency calls to repair equipment on an 'on call, 24 hour per day' basis.
