About The Position

The Utility Maintenance Mechanic I is the first step of a three-step Utility Maintenance Mechanic Series. The Utility Maintenance Mechanic I assist higher level workers and is distinguished by entry level experience with maintenance, operation, repair work of pump stations, flood pump stations and treatment facilities. Work is performed after receiving technical direction and assigned task(s) by the Utility Maintenance Mechanic III, supervisor and/or manager. This classification is a DOT regulated position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Class B driver’s license with tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire.
  • Class I KWEA collections or KDHE operations certification within 3 years of hire date.
  • Ability to operate two-way radio.
  • Ability to stand, sit or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and drag objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work with exposure to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel.
  • Ability to analyze work conditions and recognize safety hazards and correctly respond.
  • Ability to work independently, in teams, and carry out assignments through oral and written instructions.
  • Must pass a post offer criminal history background check, physical examination and drug screen.
  • Must submit proof of identity and employment eligibility.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing regulations as identified in 49 CFR Part 40 and 49 CFR Part 382.

  • Knowledge of Kansas City, KS streets is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist higher level workers with maintenance, operation, and repair of pump stations, flood pump stations, and treatment facilities.
  • Perform assigned tasks under the technical direction of the Utility Maintenance Mechanic III, supervisor, and/or manager.
  • Operate equipment related to utility maintenance.
  • Respond to work conditions, recognize safety hazards, and correctly respond.
