About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Superintendent - Water Distribution & Wastewater Collection and the direct supervision of the Supervisor – Water Distribution & Wastewater Collection, this role conducts utility locating services for various city-owned underground infrastructure and updates. The position involves researching and interpreting construction drawings, maps, and Geographical Information System (GIS) databases in conjunction with field locate equipment to accurately determine the location of underground infrastructure. The technician prepares documentation, including reports, drawings, and sketches, to provide complete and accurate locates to requestors, and investigates and verifies infrastructure locations to correct discrepancies. This role also involves reporting material and equipment defects and usage to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Secondary School graduation required
  • 1-year experience in construction, maintenance, or locating of underground municipal utilities
  • Must be able to understand infrastructure maps and construction drawings and possess basic drawing skills and have legible writing to prepare accurate reports and sketches
  • Must be at a basic skill level in word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Must be capable of reporting (written or verbal) conditions and problems on municipal infrastructure
  • Must be capable of issuing and accurately comprehending written/oral information and instructions
  • Must be tactful and courteous with the public
  • Must be reliable and have the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class “G” Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent
  • Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions
  • Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • Must provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified) if requested
  • Must be physically able to perform the duties of this position
  • Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)

Nice To Haves

  • Within 1 year of hire, must attain and maintain Damage Prevention Technician (DPT) 100 Certification

Responsibilities

  • Conducts utility locating services for various municipally owned underground infrastructure.
  • Receives and reviews locate requests and prioritizes locate work in order to meet required deadlines.
  • Researches and interprets construction drawings, maps, and Geographical Information System (GIS) databases in conjunction with field locate equipment to determine an accurate location of the infrastructure being located.
  • Prepares documentation meeting all applicable standards to provide complete and accurate locates to the requestor, including but not limited to reports, drawings, and sketches.
  • Investigates and verifies infrastructure locations and creates sketches to correct discrepancies.
  • Reports material usage to Supervisor or Designate.
  • Reports equipment and materials defects to the Supervisor or Designate.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
