About The Position

Lake Superior Consulting (LSC) is seeking Utility Locators to join their growing team. LSC is looking for individuals who are physically capable, safety-conscious, hardworking, and enjoy independent fieldwork in challenging environments. This role is responsible for accurately locating and marking underground utilities to prevent damage during excavation projects. LSC offers training for individuals with no prior experience and provides opportunities for advancement. Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older due to driver policy.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Able and willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, rain, snow).
  • Physical stamina to walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. in challenging environments.
  • Available to work overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Availability to participate in on-call rotation.
  • Valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Capability to operate a company vehicle and use general hand/power tools.
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces.
  • Able to distinguish between colors used to identify wiring and mark underground utilities.
  • Strong critical thinking, organizational, problem-solving, and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Commitment to working safely and producing high-quality, ethical service.
  • Comfortable with utilizing a laptop, Microsoft Office programs, and cell phone.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous outdoor experience is a plus.
  • Prior utility locating experience is a plus.
  • Previous experience with signal work, troubleshooting, and differentiating between parallel utilities.
  • Experience with APWA marking standards.
  • Experience reading and interpreting plan sets.
  • Experience comparing as-builts, GIS, and historical records.
  • Experience coordinating with multiple crews, subcontractors, and inspectors.
  • Experience with electronic locating equipment.
  • Experience with operator qualifications (OQs).

Responsibilities

  • Respond to locate requests within legal time limits, including routine, project, and unlocatable requests.
  • Mark found utilities using the APWA coloring system.
  • Read and interpret plan sets to identify underground utility size and type.
  • Compare as-builts, GIS, and historical records to identify conflicts.
  • Coordinate with multiple crews, subcontractors, and inspectors for phased locating.
  • Execute complex signal work, troubleshooting, and differentiating between parallel utilities.
  • Accurately document utility conflicts and anomalies.
  • Complete required paperwork and logs for locates and line crossings/excavations.
  • Adhere to LSC and client safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Communicate work scopes and responsibilities among project-specific field teams.
  • Complete and maintain operator qualifications (OQs).
  • Operate and use electronic locating equipment.
  • Gather data, prepare records, and report in a timely manner.
  • Perform daily safety meetings and submit daily report documentation.
  • Generate and gather equipment for project kickoffs.
  • Ensure work aligns with company goals.
  • Document and report incidents, near misses, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Work in compliance with all technical procedures and guidelines.
  • Be available for on-call rotation.
