About The Position

Lake Superior Consulting (LSC) is seeking multiple Utility Locators to join their growing team. This role is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who thrive in challenging environments and enjoy independent fieldwork. The primary responsibility is to accurately locate and mark underground utilities such as cables and pipes to prevent damage during excavation projects. These are full-time, daytime positions that require overtime, and some weekend work is expected. LSC emphasizes a strong commitment to quality and safety, seeking individuals with physical endurance and the ability to work in tough conditions. The company offers training for those with no prior experience and provides opportunities for advancement.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older due to company driver policy.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Able and willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, rain, snow).
  • Physical stamina to walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. in challenging environments.
  • Available to work overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Availability to participate in on-call rotation.
  • Valid driver's license and a safe driving record required.
  • Capability to operate a company vehicle and use general hand/power tools.
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces.
  • Able to distinguish between colors used for wiring and marking underground utilities.
  • Strong critical thinking, organizational, problem-solving, and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Commitment to working safely and producing high-quality, ethical service.
  • Comfortable with utilizing a laptop, Microsoft Office programs, and a cell phone.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous outdoor experience is a plus.
  • Prior utility locating experience is a plus.
  • Previous experience working in a physically demanding outdoor environment.
  • Ability to traverse rugged terrain, excavations and work around pipe and equipment.
  • Ability to travel to offsite locations for extended periods of time.
  • Frequent periods of standing for long periods.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 lb.
  • Exposure to all types of weather and terrain.
  • Ability to work long hours for extended periods, when projects demand.
  • Ability to sit at a desk and work with a computer for extended periods.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to locate requests within the legal time limit.
  • Mark found utilities using the proper APWA coloring system.
  • Read and interpret utility maps/prints to identify underground utility size and type.
  • Complete required paperwork for locates and line crossings/excavations.
  • Work safely by adhering to LSC and client guidelines and procedures.
  • Communicate work scopes and responsibilities among project-specific field-based teams.
  • Complete and maintain operator qualifications (OQs).
  • Operate and use electronic locating equipment.
  • Gather data, prepare records, and submit reports in a timely manner.
  • Perform daily safety meetings and submit daily report documentations.
  • Generate and gather equipment for project kickoffs.
  • Ensure work aligns with company goals.
  • Document and report any incidents, near misses, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Work in compliance with all technical procedures and guidelines.
  • Be available for on-call rotation.
