About The Position

Under basic supervision, performs line locating activities of the Water Distribution/Wastewater Collection (W/WW) system. Executes work orders and follows directions based on work experience. Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs the daily operations of the Utilities GIS Field Operations; assures that all actions are completed safely. Collects necessary materials, tools, equipment, and instructions before arriving at the job site. Performs work assignments; follow all city and departmental regulations and safety requirements. Contributes to work site actions to assure that safety rules and regulations are followed, and that the work zone, traffic control and all equipment are in safe operating condition. Operates light machinery in accordance with all safety guidelines including OSHA. Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries. Responds to emergency requests during normal hours and after hours. Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance. Must have and maintain a cell phone for City use to hold this position. Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • 2 years of construction and field operations experience preferred OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in public utility maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safety standards for light equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations and other safety requirements needed to maintain and repair W/WW infrastructure.
  • Ability to work after hours, weekends, and holidays (scheduled and nonscheduled).
  • Ability to respond to after-hour emergencies as needed within one hour of notification.
  • Ability to walk 3 to 5 miles a day if needed carrying equipment.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer or tablet utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must wear City-approved shoes.

Nice To Haves

  • Class D Water or Wastewater license is preferred.

  • Identify, locate, inspect and mark underground utility lines on active water, sewer and reuse mains in the City of Odessa before construction or other projects in an area using 811 ticket system.
  • Manage, balance, and complete 811 ticket load by their due date with provided ticket management software.
  • Verifies field information and communicates updates and corrections.
  • Collects Water/andWastewater mains, valves, manholes, fire hydrants, and meters using field devices to enhance GIS mapping system.
  • Reads and interprets maps, as built-ins, plans, schematics, and specifications.
  • Follows directions of crew leader and Supervisor.
  • Promotes and enforces safe work practices.
