Engineer I Utility Practice
About The Position
Three Notch Group is seeking an entry-level Utility Engineer I to support the preparation of high-quality, constructable engineering and design documents for successful project delivery. Under the guidance of a licensed Professional Engineer, the role assists with technical plans, reports, design and construction documents, studies, permits, cost estimates, and field activities while developing technical proficiency and professional independence. The position offers both office and field experience, collaboration with clients and internal teams, and opportunities for professional development and engineering licensure. Success involves producing accurate, well-organized, constructable work while meeting quality, schedule, and budget expectations. The engineer communicates effectively with clients, project leaders, and teammates; takes accountability for assigned office and field responsibilities; and builds proficiency in engineering principles, design software, technical documentation, field activities, and project delivery. The role is based in Gadsden, Alabama, and includes occasional overnight travel and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Zero to two years of experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Basic knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D or related engineering software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Ability to apply fundamental mathematical concepts, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, and basic financial calculations.
- Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, interpersonal, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Ability to perform essential engineering support duties in office and field environments.
- Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods and to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, read, write, see, hear, and communicate as required.
- Ability to lift 25 pounds or more and work extended hours when needed.
- Ability and willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, work around loud construction-site environments, and travel overnight occasionally.
- Pursue Engineer-in-Training certification and eventual Professional Engineer licensure.

Responsibilities
- Assist with client communication and attend client or public meetings as needed.
- Use computer-aided design tools and engineering software to prepare engineering plans, reports, design documents, and construction documents.
- Visit project and construction sites to monitor progress, collect information, and support project requirements.
- Contribute to project quality-control activities and take responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of assigned work.
- Define technical problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions under appropriate supervision.
- Read and interpret engineering and construction documents, governmental regulations, technical procedures, and applicable design standards.
- Assist with preparing and modifying specifications, studies, permits, plans, reports, designs, quantity estimates, and construction cost estimates.
- Prepare design computations and project deliverables under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, developing proficiency and independence.
- Communicate with project managers and practice leaders about assignments, schedule milestones, budgets, and project status.
- Manage time to complete quality work within established project schedules and budgets.
- Participate in assigned training, professional activities, software development, certifications, and other professional-development opportunities.
- Pursue Engineer-in-Training certification and eventual Professional Engineer licensure.
- Follow established guidelines, company policies, and procedures, and perform other duties as assigned.
