About The Position

The successful candidate will prune, shape, and remove trees and vegetation using hand tools, power tools, and other equipment. This role involves operating aerial devices and working safely from elevated platforms. Responsibilities include trimming trees in close proximity to high voltage power lines, clearing vegetation, and performing special projects for City departments requiring an aerial device. The position also requires maintaining tools and equipment, and may involve on-call duty outside regular work hours for scheduled and emergency work. Climbing trees to remove vegetation and prune trees, and applying Tree Growth Regulators (TGR's) are also part of the duties.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of modern tree trimming methods and safety practices.
  • Ability to interact effectively with the public and other employees.
  • Skillfully operate an aerial device.
  • Operate gas and hydraulic powered saws, trimmers, and edgers.
  • Operate chipper and stump removal equipment.
  • Work effectively in precarious positions at heights significantly above the ground.
  • Perform tree rescue.
  • Perform moderate and heavy physical labor, including lifting in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Two years of line clearance tree trimming experience.
  • Must meet Cal/OSHA Title 8 requirements for line clearance tree trimming (18 months experience).
  • Must currently possess and maintain certification as a "Certified Arborist" issued by the International Society of Arboriculture.
  • Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
  • Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces, participate in the Confined Space Program, and perform confined space rescue.

Responsibilities

  • Prune, shape, and remove trees and vegetation using hand tools, power tools, and other equipment.
  • Operate aerial devices, brush chippers, and work from elevated platforms.
  • Trim, shape and remove trees, including tree trimming in close proximity to high voltage power lines, using gas, hydraulic and power chain saws, rope rigging, other hand tools and equipment.
  • Clear and remove limbs, branches, and vegetation in close proximity to high and low voltage power lines, poles and transformers.
  • Hang banners and other special projects for City departments requiring an aerial device.
  • Clean, sharpen and maintain tools and equipment.
  • May be called to duty outside regular work hours for both scheduled and emergency work.
  • On occasion, climb trees to remove vegetation and prune trees.
  • Apply Tree Growth Regulators (TGR's).
