About The Position

The Utilities Mechanic position offers a path for professional advancement, offering opportunities for salary increase and long-term career growth by obtaining certifications/licensure applicable to water and wastewater utilities operations for a motivated candidate. Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of City water treatment, wastewater collection, and reuse treatment facilities. Employees in this position operate at the journey level and are responsible for maintaining the efficient operation of Utilities Departments facilities and equipment. Work is performed independently, with guidance from a supervisor on complex repairs or construction projects.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED, plus at least two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of machinery, pumps, motors, compressors, or water and wastewater utility systems; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s License.
  • Substantial knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment utilized in the mechanical maintenance and repair of water / wastewater utilities systems, facilities and equipment.
  • Substantial knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to mechanical maintenance and repair work.
  • Working knowledge of electricity as related to electrical motors and pump-mechanical systems.
  • Skill in inspection and testing of machinery and mechanical equipment for detecting and identifying apparatus and equipment malfunctions.
  • Ability to operate various handheld tools and repair equipment, e.g., wrenches, pipe fitting tools, power drill, grinder, band saw, ventilating blower, saws, air-compressors.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to interpret and work from codes, technical sketches, schematics, diagrams and blueprints.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple work assignments with competing deadlines
  • Must work well in teams and alone, and possess high degree of organization, record keeping ability and demonstrate willingness to learn
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with departmental personnel, all levels of employees, City officials, other government agencies, and the general public.
  • Must have general working knowledge of Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine to complex repairs, replacement tasks and maintenance activities to water and wastewater treatment, collection, and reuse facilities and equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, alters, repairs and replaces various electrical and mechanical equipment, e.g., wiring systems, switch panels, lighting systems, starters, pumps, electrical motors.
  • Inspects, maintains, installs and makes electrical repairs to specialized equipment and does other electrical and some mechanical work in repairing and replacing parts and components.
  • Inspects and maintains lift stations and wastewater facilities equipment, e.g., removes grease; lubricates motors and equipment, replaces packing in pumps and valves, replaces wiring and bearings in motors and pumps.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance of mechanical collection and conveyance systems and electrical systems.
  • Ensures all work is performed in compliance with all applicable codes, standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Reads, interprets and/or utilizes various blueprints, drawings, diagrams, and technical/electrical manuals.
  • Performs inspection of facilities and equipment to identify existing or potential problems; informs supervisor of breakdown or obstruction.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools for both electrical and mechanical repairs, e.g., air wrenches, air hammer, electric drill, saw, air compressor.
  • Assists in the development and integration of Utilities Department policies and procedures for operational enhancement.
  • Maintains various records and reports, e.g., job records, parts inventory, supply lists, work orders.
  • Maintains inventory supply for parts, equipment, machinery and tools; procures necessary items.
  • Prepares job estimates; submits purchase orders and price quotes for supervisor approval.
  • Responsible for being on-call after hours, weekends, and during emergencies as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as directed when such duties are logical/appropriate assignment to position.
