About The Position

Amgen is seeking a Utilities Manager – HVAC / Electrical to lead a large and diverse group of craft-oriented personnel at their newest and most advanced drug substance manufacturing plant, the Amgen FleX Batch facility. This facility combines the latest in disposable technologies with traditional stainless-steel equipment for maximum flexibility and integrates sustainability innovations to reduce carbon and waste, aligning with Amgen's plan to be a carbon-neutral company by 2027. The role involves providing technical and administrative leadership for utility operations, including HVAC and electrical systems, ensuring continuous and compliant operations, and managing a robust maintenance program.

Requirements

  • Doctorate degree OR Master’s degree and 2 years of Manufacturing Equipment Maintenance experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of Manufacturing Equipment Maintenance experience OR Associate’s degree and 8 years of Manufacturing Equipment Maintenance experience OR High school diploma / GED and 10 years of Manufacturing Equipment Maintenance experience
  • Experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, or directing the allocation of resources.
  • 4+ years’ experience in engineering or utility operations within biotechnology and/or pharmaceutical or other regulatory environments, or Military experience
  • 3+ years’ experience of ensuring compliance in a highly regulated environment
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and facilitation skills and ability to work in a collaborative team-based environment
  • Ability to apply analytical skills to evaluate and interpret complex problems using multiple sources of information
  • Ability to lead multiple tasks and effectively set priorities
  • Proven skill in goal setting and driving continuous improvement through setting and monitoring of key metrics
  • Extensive knowledge of electro-mechanical, fluid, and gas equipment and systems
  • Experience leading or supporting HVAC and/or electrical maintenance teams in manufacturing, utility operations, construction/startup, or regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of HVAC utility operations, mechanical maintenance, refrigeration systems and controls, DX cooling, HEPA filtration/certification, cold rooms/freezers, and environmental control systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems and controls such as switchgear, MCCs, panelboards, lighting systems, UPSs, emergency generators, solar array inverters, motor starters, VFDs, low-voltage circuits, electrical drawings/schematics, and applicable local and national code requirements.
  • Experience developing, reviewing, and technically approving maintenance reports, forms, plans, records, SOPs, work orders, job plans, and safety/quality documentation in a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Strong knowledge of maintenance management, utilities operations programs, and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems
  • Demonstrated skill in analyzing and improving facilities related quality systems

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and administrative leadership to a large and diverse group of craft-oriented personnel, with areas of focus including HVAC, refrigeration, environmental controls, electrical systems, and utility systems.
  • Lead the Amgen NC F&E utility staff supporting utility operations including HVAC and electrical systems at the site.
  • Provide support as required to maintain continuous and compliant (safety, quality, etc.) utility operations at the site.
  • Management and monitoring of a robust utility system maintenance program consisting of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities to maximize personnel safety, equipment reliability, overall equipment effectiveness, and product quality.
  • Lead maintenance strategies for Utility systems, including startup, commissioning, qualification support, daily operations, preventive/predictive/corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and vendor/service-provider oversight.
  • Provide leadership for HVAC and environmental control systems including air handling and exhaust fan units, biosafety cabinets, air directional flow hoods, HEPA filtration/certification, walk-in cold rooms and freezers, refrigeration/DX systems, environmental chambers, steam, chilled water, compressed air, cooling tower water, and heating hot water systems.
  • Provide leadership for electrical systems including switchgear, MCCs, panelboards, lighting systems, UPSs, solar array inverters, emergency generators, motor starters, VFDs, low-voltage control circuits, and related inspection, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and documentation activities.
  • Ensure HVAC and electrical maintenance program documentation is developed, implemented, and maintained, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), change controls (CCMS), non-conformances (NCs), work orders (WOs), job plans (JPs), hazard risk assessments (HRAs), and job hazard assessments (JHAs).
  • Partner with Capital Project Delivery, Site Operations, Engineering, Quality, EHS, Manufacturing, equipment vendors, and maintenance service providers to support construction, startup, commissioning, qualification, safe operations, and ongoing reliability of HVAC and electrical assets.
  • Ensure that all staff are trained and comply with all safety and GMP standards and procedures.
  • Maximize staff productivity and the efficient use of available resources across facilities.
  • Analysis and accurate review of engineering / construction / maintenance cost forecasts against scope.
  • Oversight and execution of complex facilities/utilities/maintenance related initiatives and small projects.
  • Provide expertise and resources for capital project execution.
  • Work cross-functionally with individuals, partners, clients, and others in Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, Quality, Supply Chain and Manufacturing networks.
  • Maintain and improve plant capability and equipment reliability in partnership with engineering leadership and technical staff.
  • Identify areas of potential improvement, conduct analyses, recommend solutions, sponsor improvement projects and lead or support implementation.
  • Maintain and develop key performance indicators of maintenance performance, lead, assess, develop staff and ensure that all targets and milestones are completed on time and on budget.
  • Support network-wide improvement in plant maintenance and operation.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to organizational resources to accomplish activities and objectives.
